Notes: * The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) generally defines “Affordable Housing” as housing on which the occupant is paying no more than 30 percent of gross income for housing costs, including utilities. For specific information on Wake Forest’s affordable housing, refer to the Affordable Housing Plan. STRATEGY 2. Preserve existing parks, greens, and open spaces. Since parks and green spaces are amenities members of the Northeast Community feel are important to the neighborhood’s aesthetic appeal and quality of life, work should be done to maintain and enhance these spaces. Wayfinding signage and interpretive panels offer park and greenspace users an improved experience by better directing people to important sites and providing information about a particular place, which may not be self- evident to most.

As new development continues to place pressure on existing residents, it will become increasingly important to identify programs, initiatives, and targeted funding mechanisms (including small grant programs) to allow existing residents flexibility in maintaining their home. Programs and initiatives focusing on housing improvement or rehabilitation and aging in place, will be of particular importance due to the high number of income-restricted seniors living in the community. Additionally, providing residents with a better understanding of the real estate market and the pros and cons of selling their homes will further ensure residents are making well-informed decisions about their housing situation when approached by developers, investors, and builders.
