shelved as too late to do this year until the local Anglican diocese offered use of the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church property at the corner of Rockdale Road and Devine Street as a site. Now the VCA has space for 20 vendors’ tables and so far confirmation for four ven- dors to set up for the first Vars Community Farmers’ Market next month. But Séguin
said there should be at least a dozen ven- dors on site to make the local farmers mar- ket project viable. “If we don’t have vendors,” he said, “then this will shut down.” VCA members discussed possibilities for vendors for the inaugural community mar- ket. One problem is that most local farmers are in the midst of their growing season and have nothing harvested yet for sale. Séguin and other association board members not- ed that a community farmers market is not just about offering local produce for sale. Other types of vendors, like crafters, artists, and those offering homemade baking and preserves, are also welcome. The VCA will meet with diocese officials at the end of June to determine if the number of confirmed vendors will make a commu- nity market feasible this summer. The Vars Co mm unity Association hopes to have the sa m e success with its own co mm unity m arket project if enough vendors prove available to fill the booth spaces at the inaugural event.
