Mickey E. Echols, 75, was critically injured when the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado that he was driving left the roadway and struck a culvert. After the initial impact, the Chevrolet went airborne and overturned multiple times. Echols was not using a seat belt at the time of crash and was partially ejected. Echols was transported to Marshall Medical Center South, where he succumbed to injuries and was pronounced dead. The crash occurred on Alabama 68 near Dekalb County 362, approximately six miles west of Crossville, in Dekalb County. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate. PEDESTRIAN KILLED IN IDER - A single- vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on April 10 claimed the life of an Ider man. The pedestrian, Randy K. Taylor, 44, was fatally injured when he was struck by the 2011 Mini Cooper driven by an 18-year-old. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Alabama 75 near Dekalb County 789, approximately two miles north of Ider. CULLMAN MAN KILLED- A single-vehicle crash on April 8, claimed the life of a Cullman man. James K. Neal, 89, was fatally injured when his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado left the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned multiple times. Neal was not using a seat belt at the time of crash. He was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred on Cullman County 813 near Cullman County 410, approximately six miles west of Good Hope. JAIL INMATE HOSPITALIZED - An Etowah County inmate was hospitalized, and another is facing additional charges, after an altercation between the two inmates. According to Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton, Detention Deputies were alerted to an altercation between the inmates in a holding cell in the Etowah County Detention Center just before 2 p.m. on April 7, 2024. Special Operations Deputies responded and broke up the altercation. One 33-year-old white male was transported by ambulance to a local hospital and later transferred to a Birmingham area hospital. The 33 year-old was being held on D.U.I charges and was waiting to be extradited to Attalla Police Department for their charges. A 49-year- old white male involved in the incident was arrest a few hours earlier by deputies for giving false information and receiving stolen property 1st for a vehicle he was found in stolen from Virginia. He was moved to isolation for his role in the altercation. The Marshall County Sheriff's Office was contacted, responded and are investigating the case for further criminal charges. At the time of the news release neither person involved in the altercation was named. The public is invited to the annual Cardinal Arts Journal Reading and Exhibit at 4 p.m. on April 24. Come see an exhibit of works compiled from submissions to the CAJ. Writers will also read their poems, essays and short stories. It will be held at the Center for Cultural Arts. Additionally, Women in Poetry will be at 4 p.m. on April 29 at the Center for Cultural Arts. Learn more about the history of women and poetry through watching videos and hearing recordings of famous women reading their poetry. There will also be group discussions about women in poetry.
