Sideline Sports LADY VOLS NAME NEW COACH - Kim Caldwell has been named the University of Tennessee Women's Head Basketball Coach. Caldwell becomes the fourth head coach of the Lady Vols in the NCAA era of women’s basketball, which began with the late, legendary Pat Summitt at the helm. A rising star in the profession, Caldwell has quickly made an elite mark at two different levels of the game, earning eight NCAA berths and winning seven conference trophies in her eight seasons as a head coach. She led NCAA Division II Glenville State and DI Marshall to championship seasons. 2024 AHSAA KICKOFF CLASSIC - The 19th annual AHSAA Kickoff Classic is set to get underway on Thursday, August 22 at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl at 7 p.m. Reeltown, the 2023 Class 2A state runner-up, and Class 3A T.R. Miller are set to face off in the season opening match-up. Vestavia Hills and Carver-Montgomery will play at 7 p.m., on Friday, August 23 in the second game of the annual classic. Both games will be at 7 p.m. and will be televised over the AHSAA TV Network. NCAA WOMEN'S CHAMPS - The South Carolina women's basketball team (38-0) defeated Iowa (34-5), 87-75, inside a sold-out Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Sunday, April 7, to win the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. National Player of the Year, Caitlin Clark has registered 491 points (NCAA record), 152 assists (NCAA record), 78 3-point field goals (NCAA record) in 17 career NCAA Tournament games for Iowa. Clark is the only player in the country with 1,200+ points, 325+ assists, and 275+ rebounds this season. She is also the first Division-I men’s or women’s player to record 3,900+ points, 1,100+ assists, and 950+ rebounds in a career. Clark and teammate Hannah Stuelke both made the 2024 Final Four All-Tournament team. South Carolina's Kamila Cardosa was the Most Outstanding Player. Gamecock teammate Tessa Johnson also made the All-tournament team. Uconn's Paige Bueckers rounded out the 2024 Final Four All-Tournament Team. NCAA MEN'S CHAMPS - No. 1-ranked UConn stopped Purdue’s quest for its first National Championship with a 75-60 setback in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship on Monday, April 8 in front of 74,423 fans. It was the third-largest championship game crowd ever. The Boilermakers finished the season with a 34-5 record, setting the school record for wins in a season (34). Additionally, the senior class of Zach Edey, Mason Gillis, Ethan Morton, Lance Jones, Chase Martin and Carson Barrett finished their careers with a 110-29 overall record (.791), the most wins. Zach Edey scored 37 points in the championship game and a double-double with 10 rebounds for Purdue. Tristen Newton led Uconn with points in the win. KENTUCKY BASKETBALL COACH - Mark Pope has been named the new head men's basketball coach at the University of Kentucky. Pope, a captain on the Wildcat's 1996 National Championship team, has returned to Lexington as the 23rd head coach of Kentucky’s storied men’s program. He is replacing former coach John Calipari who is now at the helm of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Pope is a nine-year head coaching veteran with stops at BYU and Utah Valley, amassing a 187-108 career record. He is coming off a 23-11 season in 2023-24. To read the full story visit www.thesportsledger.com. EXCEPTIONAL ANGLERS - The Exceptional Anglers event, Gone Fishin', Not Just Wishin', at Oak Mountain State Park will take place May 8-10, 2024. The event teaches basic fishing skills to students with disabilities from Alabaster and Pelham city schools and the Shelby and Jefferson county school systems. The media is invited to attend on Thursday, May 9, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. During the event, students will be given the opportunity to fish, participate in art projects, learn about fish and wildlife, perform with local musicians, listen to storytellers and learn aspects of water safety, including the proper use of life jackets. The fishing and festivities will take place behind the park’s main office.

Geraldine's Brooklyn Hall recently signed a Volleyball Scholarship with Spring Hill College in Mobile. During her AHSAA Career, Brooklyn had 1763 Kills and 307 Blocks. She earned All- County, All-Area, All-State honors from 9th grade till 12th. Additionally, she was a member of the AHSAA All Star Team for 2023 and chosen to play in the North/South All-Star and the in the East/West All-Star games. Brooklyn is ranked 49th Nationally for AHSAA for kills for 2024 (638 kills), Top 4 in Alabama for Blocks, and No. 1 in Division 3A for kills. She is reportedly the first volleyball player to receive a D2 scholarship right out of high school at Geraldine as a college freshman. In addition to playing for Geraldine, Brooklyn is involved in Travel Ball and she plays for Bama Elite and competes nationally. She was on the JVA top 10 watch list for 2023 and currently on the 2024 watch list. She has played volleyball since she was 9 years old and started club ball when she was 13 years old.
