from Christmas vacation, the rear windows of the building where he works were broken and all the computers were stolen from the offices. His boss contacted a security company which recommended install- ing access control on the front door and a surveillance system to monitor the hallway and offices. Upon returning from Easter break, they found the same rear windows broken and all the computers stolen again. The reason this occurred was because they hadmisdiagnosed the DBT. The threat was not unauthorized access; instead it was breaking and entering. They needed to replace the bro- ken windows with laminated glazing. This would have pre- vented the windows from being broken in the first place and subsequently, prevented the theft of the computers. Non-aggressive Strategies that Make People Do the Right Thing People were cutting across a middle school campus on their way to a convenience store down the street. Since they had easy access to the school they were also “tagging” and writing graffiti. The school administrators wanted to put

up a chain-linked fence with gate which they would lock when school was not in session. Our solution was holistic. On three sides of the property we had native bushes with thorns planted and in the front of them planted flower beds full of local flowers; placed a rail post fence behind it with the same “prickly” bushes behind it. Then in the front of the build- ing, we enlarged the windows that faced the “drop-off/pick- up” area by just 15 percent. This allowed for people inside the building to better observe people in the front areas of the building during the school hours. We also added a motion activated surveillance system and connected it to the exterior lighting system, so that people walking by would be captured on film and at night would they would also be illuminat- ed. Since there really wasn’t any way to take a “short-cut” through the campus anymore without traipsing through the bushes and getting scratched, they were forced to walk on the sidewalk where we wanted them to walk, the trespassing and vandalism stopped. Creating the “Puppy Feeling” continued on page 16B

the important role that archi- tects and engineers play in assuring its efficiency. To sum- marize, those concepts are; 1) have a team of stakeholders collectively determine which threats or hazards, natural and man-made, the building and the people using it will be subjected to (establishing the DBT), 2) implement mitigation strategies that cause people to do the right thing because the wrong thing is not possible (social engineering), and 3) create the “puppy feeling” by using non-aggressive and non- electronic technologies. The following real-world examples illustrate these con- cepts: Wrong DBT – Wrong Solution My nephew works for a soft- ware company. Upon returning
