BALLOON (STEVE LOVATT)

While the origins of balloon modelling are unknown, a 1975 book credits a Pennsylvanian magician named Herman Bonnert as the first balloon twister. Playful sculptor Steve Lovatt first learned how to create balloon animals at a birthday party, and is inspired by artists like Masayoshi Matsumoto. He says: “Doing what I do brings happiness to both me and my collectors. It draws upon a symbol of happiness and themes of children’s parties and simple pleasures.”

EQUESTRIAN PORTRAITS (CAROLINE SHOTTON)

Simply put, equestrian portraits show the subject mounted on horseback. Sculptures of this ilk were produced even before the Middle Ages, with the most well-known example being the Roman statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelias. In later centuries, the genre acquired chivalric overtones (with the world chivalry translating to ‘horseman’). These artworks have long been associated with nobility. This Caroline Shotton piece is a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of the classic ‘Napoleon Crossing the Alps’ by Jacques-Louis David.
