FAKE OR FORGERY (JOHN MYATT)
While ‘fake’ and ‘forgery’ are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two. A fake is an artwork that has been tampered with (for instance by adding a signature or producing a false provenance) whereas a forgery is a direct imitation of another artist’s creation with the intention to deceive the viewer. Former secondary school teacher John Myatt hit the headlines after becoming embroiled in what Scotland Yard call “the biggest art fraud of the 20th century” . Between 1986 and 1993, John faked as many as 200 works. He now delights collectors with his interpretations of pieces by Vincent van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci.
