LET’S TALK ABOUT PIZZA Growing Up With My Cousin’s NY Pizza Parlor and My Favorite Pizza of All Time
Last month, we talked about our $100 Restaurant Gift Card Program to assist restaurants in local communities across the U.S. So, since there’s nothing on the news to talk about (I say with a wink), I think last month’s edition is enough buildup for this month’s topic: PIZZA! October is National Pizza Month, but like many Americans, I love pizza all year long. Ferne and I make pizza a lot at home, and we experiment with all sorts of pizza toppings. We make barbecue chicken pizza, crazy veggie pizza, clam pie pizza, fruit (yes fruit!) pizza, meatball and onion pizza, you name it. Can you imagine anything that wouldn’t taste good on a pizza? My only requirement for pizza is that it has to be gluten free, but everyone is into that lately so gluten-free pizza crusts are easier to find these days. I’ll be honest: It’s tough trying to find good pizza in Florida. Growing up, I had relatives who owned pizza parlors in Long Island, New York, and they gave us the inside scoop on how to make amazing pizzas. Their biggest secret was the water. I’m not kidding! The mineral content of New York tap water, as well as the humidity of the air, helps contribute to some of the world’s best pizza dough, the foundation of the amazing New Value Capital Funding … Get to Know Us Better Value Capital Funding specializes in helping small- business owners nationwide restructure their business debt. York pizza. During breaks from college, I’d come to their store with friends and we’d get free pizza. Now, free pizza is hard to beat. Really hard to beat. But the best-tasting pizza I’ve ever had isn’t tough for me to narrow down — that’s how good it was. And unusual.
Lobster pizza.
After sending our kids off to summer camp in the Pocono Mountains about 15 years ago, my wife, sister-in-law, brother- in-law, and I vacationed together in Bar Harbor, Maine, near Acadia National Park. That was a really great trip and a quaint little town. It didn’t have many dining options, but the places it did have were all amazing. During the week we were there, we had lobster pizza three times. You might be thinking, “Gosh, Barry, that sounds pretty odd ... lobster on a pizza!” Trust me, zero risk is involved trying this pizza. Put fresh lobster on a garlic ricotta white sauce, mozzarella, smoked bacon, jalapeno, and finish with arugula, and it’ll blow your mind every time. That was more than 15 years ago. I hope that place is still doing okay because Ferne and I would love to go back there someday. Maybe get some lobster ice cream for dessert again! Yep, you heard me right! Anyway, what’s your favorite kind of pizza? It’s always a good time to celebrate pizza, but now is an especially great time since we have a whole month devoted to it! We’d love to know what kind of pies you order. Have a wonderful pizza October, everyone.

Business is competitive by nature. If competitors didn’t push our favorite brands to be better, they may not even exist. Our technology options would be limited without Apple’s ingenuity. Shipping options would be limited without UPS or FedEx. And access to our favorite athletic gear would be more limited if no one was pushing the top brands like Nike to innovate. Competition fuels our greatest inventions, but behind every great leader or business is a core network of like-minded people and innovators supporting them. Professional associations connect business leaders to fellow innovators in their industry without competition from local rivals. These organizations offer many benefits and little risk to business leaders looking to grow. If you haven’t yet joined a professional association, these three benefits just might get you to change your mind. Learn and Grow With a Professional Association YOU’RE NOT ALONE
STAY CONNECTED, EVEN AT HOME
Try Digital Networking
It can be exhausting to network, but doing it digitally gives you access to people from across the world — all from your sofa. If you’re used to traditional networking, digital networking might seem like an elusive concept to you. How do you build new relationships when you’ve never met someone face to face? We’re here to tell you a secret: People do it every day. Here’s how.
KEEP EVERYTHING CURRENT.
EDUCATION AND RESOURCES
When’s the last time you updated your LinkedIn? The more details, the better. Even if you wanted to talk about your extracurriculars, you should — chances are there’s a fellow working professional with similar interests. Make sure you include your alma mater, professional associations, volunteer experience, publications, or even a cause you’re passionate about. It’ll be sure to draw the attention of like- minded people. Struggling to have your content shine on your platform? Create your own website to better showcase your work, credentials, interests, writing ability, and more.
Google is great for a quick answer, but when you need to learn something more nuanced, a simple internet search won’t cut it. Professional associations offer tailored, more in- depth help and resources like industry-specific training and webinars, how-to guides, and coaching. From peer advice and education to scholarly studies and reviews, associations act as a library of information for your industry.
NETWORKING AND MENTORSHIP
Why reinvent the wheel when you can adapt it with a mentor? Associations connect you to leaders who have stood where you are standing and succeeded. You can learn a lot from their failures, wisdom, and guidance. You can also connect with peers in your position and bounce ideas off of them. You won’t have to worry about competitors “stealing” your processes, and you have an honest, go-to support team to help you refine them before presenting them to your team.
GIVE PEOPLE A REASON TO REACH OUT TO YOU FIRST.
As soon as there’s an expert in the room, people start approaching them. You want to be that expert. Hone your voice by writing posts and sharing content that interests you while freely offering advice. It’s great to comment on other people’s posts, too! Being active will give your network plenty of reasons to chat with you.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH
BE AUTHENTIC.
A business is only as good as the leader managing it, and all business leaders have room for improvement. An association can give you the tools to get there. And as you continue to learn, you’ll discover personal and professional areas that can be further refined. This personal development only makes you and your business stronger. Are you still not convinced you should join an association? Think of it this way: Your competitors could be growing through their involvement in an association while you remain stagnant. Push forward and connect with your peers today.
The concept of networking often makes people feel “dirty” because they don’t want to seem selfish. But this feeling is a misconception about networking itself. Networking works best when it isn’t inherently selfish. Be curious about creating genuine relationships that are mutually beneficial. Provide your gratitude and passion for your work, and you’ll be sure to find connections that last your whole career. Digital conferences aren’t all there is to digital networking. Regularly keep up with your relationships, and you’ll be sure to grow your network quicker than you could have imagined. Best of luck on your next LinkedIn post!

CALIFORNIA STYLE PIZZA | SPAGO BEVERLY HILLS, LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA The Golden State has long been home to some of the most innovative topping combinations, like barbecue chicken, Thai chicken, and avocado carpaccio. Weird and Wacky Halloween Laws
SPOOKY CITY REGULATIONS
HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA: NO SILLY STRING
Halloween can be a mischievous holiday. The most innocent of us reserve it for backyard parties and trick-or-treating, but some like to get a little rowdier than others. That’s exactly why various city councils across the U.S. have passed some seemingly unusual laws to regulate spooky festivities.
by passing a law restricting teenagers who are past the eighth grade — generally older than 13 — from going door to door on Halloween.
The Los Angeles City Council has banned Silly String and all other brands of aerosol string from use on Halloween in the Hollywood area. From midnight on Oct. 31 until noon on Nov. 1, no one is allowed to spray, sell, or distribute Silly String in public locations. Use of Silly String got so popular in the city on Halloween that the mess left behind became a strain on sanitation workers, and the city sympathized with them.
WALNUT, CALIFORNIA: NO MASKS WITHOUT PERMITS
In a simpler time, there was no paperwork required to celebrate Halloween to the fullest. But in the city of Walnut, no one can wear a mask or other disguise on public streets without a permit from the sheriff. The law doesn’t specify any exceptions, so residents are left to assume that everyone from age 5 to 100 must abide. Whatever your Halloween celebrations might look like this year, it’s important to have fun, but remember to abide by any rules or laws your city might have in place in an effort to keep its citizens safe.
REHOBOTH BEACH, DELAWARE: NO SUNDAY TRICK-OR-TREATING
If Halloween falls on a Sunday, children in Rehoboth Beach are required to trick-or-treat the night before. The explanation in the city code is simple, but ambiguous: to prevent children and their guardians from going door to door on Sunday evenings. Rehoboth Beach law also forbids children from roaming the streets on Halloween “with the intent to cause trouble,” but what exactly that means is ambiguous as well.
BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS: NO 8TH GRADERS
Trick-or-treating is most often viewed as an activity reserved for younger generations, but how do you determine what age is “too old” for this type of generally good-natured fun? Well, the city of Belleville settled the ambiguity
