THE DOURO RIVER

The Douro River is one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. It originates in the Sierra de Urbión in Spain and flows westward for about 897 kilometers (557 miles) through Spain and northern Portugal before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean at Porto Wine Region The Douro Valley is renowned for its wine production, particularly Port wine. The terraced vineyards along the river are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Scenic Beauty The river is famous for its stunning landscapes, including steep valleys, picturesque villages, and historic towns. The Douro railway line, which runs close to the river, offers breathtaking views. Hydroelectric Power The river has been extensively harnessed for hydroelectric power and irrigation, contributing significantly to the region’s economy.
