Job Description: The Senior Energy Engineer is a member of the Sustainability Team. Based within the Finance, Infrastructure and Commercial Services Division, the Sustainability Team are a major contributor to delivering on the University’s Strategy 2030 commitment to ‘lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis.’ The team has responsibility for delivering on the University’s net zero and net environmental gain targets and this job will assist managing with the work relating to reducing scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.

Main purpose of the job The Senior Energy Engineer is responsible for the development and delivery of scope 1 and 2 carbon reduction projects that make a major contribution to achieving the University’s net zero target. They champion and promote the benefits of a low-carbon design across the University. The role holder also assists the Head of Carbon and Energy to identify, implement, monitor and review strategies, policies and projects to reduce the University’s carbon emissions and utility consumption. Main duties and accountabilities • Lead the early feasibility and RIBA Stage 1/2 design of scope 1 and 2 reduction projects. • Identify, develop, plan and maintain a programme of scope 1 and 2 projects in conjunction with the Carbon and Energy Team and Estates Services. • Be Project Manager on minor and major multi-disciplinary projects with responsibility for delivering projects on time and to the required quality. • Working closely with colleagues and consultants, assist in the planning, development and implementation of a long-term Infrastructure Decarbonisation Masterplan. • Lead the development of smart building

engineer solutions to minimise energy consumption across university building and energy infrastructure. Communication and Liaison • Develop high quality relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels. • Be the lead energy engineering expert within the Sustainability Team, collaborating with Estates Services and external consultants in the development of scope 1 and 2 carbon reduction projects. • Collaborate with the Building Management Systems Engineers within Estate Services in reviewing control strategies and developing improvement plans to reduce energy consumption.

Analysis and Reporting • Undertake detailed energy and carbon analysis of energy infrastructure projects indicating long term impact of the electricity and gas network. • Establish and monitor key performance indicators and regularly review performance against external benchmarks. • Production of reports and papers for senior management seeking approval for project progression and funding.

• Recommend financial plans and budgets, to ensure effective delivery of the University’s net zero commitments. • Identify opportunities to fund sustainability projects through external sources, coordinates and prepares bids and manages successful outcomes. • Responsible for effective management of individual project budgets. • Manage procurement to ensure value for money for the University. Problem Solving • Prioritise competing demands and proactively manage large workloads and busy schedules whilst liaising closely with senior management and external contacts to keep them informed of any progress or changes to arrangements. • Resolve conflict arising from controversial issues with project stakeholders as well as other internal and external colleagues. • Provide specialist advice and support to colleagues across the University on energy efficiency and low carbon solutions.

People Management • Matrix management of project teams

including external consultants and contractors. • Deputise for the Head of Carbon and Energy when required. Decision Making • Responsible for the development and

implementation of multi-disciplinary projects and project programmes and is expected to make all necessary decisions commensurate with their management. Planning and Organising Resources • Plan the implementation of individual projects (minor and major) and other multi-disciplinary project programmes.
