Summer Thematic Programs Webster offers two 4-week study abroad sessions at its Geneva, Leiden and Vienna campuses in the summer. Summer 1 takes place during the month of June and Summer 2 takes place during July. Each session offers different thematic areas with a 3-credit core course and a 1- credit experiential learning course to enhance learning. Students can study abroad for one or two sessions and combine program locations for a comparative study abroad experience. This is an example of summer 2024 offerings. Vienna, Austria - Study Psychology, Music, Art, or Public Relations Summer 1 Vienna: Capital of Music
Leiden, the Netherlands - Study Business or Psychology Summer 1 Beer, Bulbs and Cheese Beer, bulbs and cheese can be seen as symbols of Dutch traditions, history and heritage. All three products have played a significant role in shaping Dutch identify and culture. Next to that, these exported products are very important to the Dutch economy and contribute to the country’s worldwide profile as a producer of high-quality, innovative and unique products. In this program, we will look at the challenges and successes of these industries and their impact on the Dutch economy.
Vienna has been at the epicentre of musical development throughout the centuries, from the Baroque period through the Viennese Classical Period and right up to present day electronic music. The Vienna: World capital of music package is designed for music lovers who are majoring in areas outside of music, but nonetheless deeply interested in Austria’s rich traditions and latest works. Sex and the City Vienna’s Sex in the City package, designed for students majoring or interested in psychology and matters of sexuality, examines human sexual behaviour within cultural, social and political contexts. Students will learn about the evolutionary basis of sexual reproduction and its psychological consequences, conflicting historical and cross-cultural sexual attitudes, reproductive health, rights, sexual experience, gender differences, roles, orientation and sex in relation to disease, law, social responsibility and personal ethics. Vienna: Global Art This program offers an immersive experience in art production, research, art history and cultural exchange. It is meant to provide a studio art-focused and professional art practice experience that works to emulate a studio residency in a new locale. Students will be creating artwork, visiting with professional artists and learning from their new environment through museum visits and cultural exploration. There will be class critiques over artwork produced, class discussions about exhibitions, studio visits with local artists and will conclude with an exhibition of student made artwork. Studio projects will focus on drawing, printmaking, sculpture and site-specific artwork.
Summer 2 Drugs and Chemical Dependency
This course introduces the history, pharmacology and physiological effects of a variety of commonly abused substances. Emphasis is on the behavioral and social implications of drug use and abuse, treatment and treatment methods for drug abuse.
Geneva, Switzerland - Study Business or International Relations Summer 1 Global Governance Part 1
Since Geneva is home to the UN, these courses combine theoretical knowledge and experiential skills integration through the world governments architectural framework for peace negotiations, arms treaties and other forms of agreements relative to conflict and dispute resolution, including sustainable solutions, via visits and speakers. Sports in Switzerland Geneva and Switzerland are headquarters to global sports organizations governing professional and amateur sports, including the Olympics (Paris 2024), in addition to signature Swiss sport activities such as hiking, biking, skiing, swimming and sailing. These courses examine the social and economic impact of these Swiss sports entities and industries via experiential visits, events and sports sampling. Summer 2 Global Governance Part 2 As Geneva is home of the UN, this course focuses on all aspects of intergovernmental organizations, from their origins and evolution to modern day, including historical and current applicable events. The course includes speakers from and visits to various super transnational organizations. Winemaking: From France to Geneva Geneva borders France and is home to some of the finest wines and wineries in the world. These courses cover Swiss and French wines culturally and economically, including through tasting and culinary experiences culminating in Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 Testing for Certification.
Summer 2 Music Cognition
The impact of music on the mind and behavior can be profound and varies among individuals. This program is focused on students majoring or interested in Psychology and the brain’s perception of music. Bacon and Eggs: Viennese Cafes and the Birth of Public Relations Have you ever wondered why a breakfast of bacon and eggs is so quintessentially American? When you’re scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, what content makes you want to tell someone else about them? The answers to these and related questions await you in Vienna. We’ll survey the lives and contributions of people like Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freund, who applied Freudian psychoanalysis to form what we call ‘public relations’ today (he’s the one responsible for bacon and eggs, by the way). We’ll look at the work of Austrians Paul Lazarsfeld, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper, among others to help form a clear and unique understanding of Vienna’s contributions to field that still impact us today. In addition, we’ll also examine Austria’s own history with anti-Semitic far-right political movements and how these affect current events to this day.
