SUMMER THEMATIC PROGRAMS Webster offers two 4-week study abroad sessions at its Geneva, Leiden and Vienna Campuses in the summer. Summer 1 takes place during the month of June and Summer 2 takes place during July. Each session offers different thematic areas with a 3-credit core course and a 1- credit experiential learning course to enhance learning. Students can study abroad for one or two sessions and combine program locations for a comparative study abroad experience. This is an example of summer 2025 offerings. VIENNA, AUSTRIA - STUDY ART, MUSIC OR PSYCHOLOGY Summer 1 Vienna: Capital of Music Vienna has been at the epicentre of musical development throughout the centuries, from the Baroque period through the Viennese Classical Period and right up to present day electronic music. The Vienna: World capital of music package is designed for music lovers who are majoring in areas outside of music, but nonetheless deeply interested in Austria’s rich traditions and latest works. Sex and the City Vienna’s Sex in the City package, designed for students majoring or interested in psychology and matters of sexuality, examines human sexual behaviour within cultural, social and political contexts. Students will learn about the evolutionary basis of sexual reproduction and its psychological consequences, conflicting historical and cross-cultural sexual attitudes, reproductive health, rights, sexual experience, gender differences, roles, orientation and sex in relation to disease, law, social responsibility and personal ethics. Vienna: Global Art This program offers an immersive experience in art production, research, art history and cultural exchange. It is meant to provide a studio art-focused and professional art practice experience that works to emulate a studio residency in a new locale. Students will be creating artwork, visiting with professional artists and learning from their new environment through museum visits and cultural exploration. There will be class critiques over artwork produced, class discussions about exhibitions, studio visits with local artists and will conclude with an exhibition of student made artwork. Studio projects will focus on drawing, printmaking, sculpture and site-specific artwork. Summer 2 Music Cognition The impact of music on the mind and behavior can be profound and varies among individuals. This program is focused on students majoring or interested in Psychology and the brain’s perception of music. LEIDEN, THE NETHERLANDS - STUDY BUSINESS, ART, BIOLOGY, BUSINESS OR PSYCHOLOGY Summer 1 Beer, Bulbs and Cheese Beer, bulbs and cheese can be seen as symbols of Dutch traditions, history and heritage. All three products have played a significant role in shaping Dutch identify and culture. Next to that, these exported products are very important to the Dutch economy and contribute to the country’s worldwide profile as a producer of high-quality, innovative and unique products. In this program, we will look at the challenges and successes of these industries and their impact on the Dutch economy. Biotechnology in Leiden This program introduces the topic of biotechnology with a specific emphasis on work being done in the Netherlands, which is a top location for biotech innovation. Students will meet scientists and explore the research environment at locations such as Janssen Pharmaceuticals and will enhance their learning experience, providing a firsthand look at how research translates into real-world applications.
Summer 2 Drugs and Chemical Dependency
This course introduces the history, pharmacology and physiological effects of a variety of commonly abused substances. Emphasis is on the behavioral and social implications of drug use and abuse, treatment and treatment methods for drug abuse. GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - STUDY ART HISTORY, BUSINESS, COMMUNICATIONS, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS OR PSYCHOLOGY Since Geneva is home to the UN, this program combines theoretical knowledge and experiential skills integration through the world governments architectural framework for peace negotiations, arms treaties and other forms of agreements relative to conflict and dispute resolution, including sustainable solutions, via visits and speakers. Swiss Art and Photography Markets Studying the art and photography markets in Switzerland offers students an unparalleled opportunity to explore a dynamic environment where culture meets innovation. Switzerland’s thriving cultural scene, home to esteemed galleries and institutions, serves as an ideal setting for immersive learning. Visits to Art Basel and Photo Basel, two of the world’s premier commercial fairs, enrich this experience, fostering an understanding of the global art and photography markets. Sports and Media in Switzerland Geneva and Switzerland are headquarters to global sports organizations governing professional and amateur sports. This immersive theme invites students to delve into the heart of Swiss sports, exploring the historical significance, modern innovations and the fusion of athleticism and culture. Students examine the social and economic impact of these Swiss sports entities and industries via experiential visits and exchanges with professionals affiliated with sports organizations. Summer 2 Swiss Chocolate and Wine This immersive summer course explores the economic impact of two of Switzerland’s most iconic industries — chocolate and wine. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of how these products have shaped Switzerland’s economy, from production and export trends to their cultural significance and global influence. Through hands-on learning, including visits to renowned Swiss chocolate factories and vineyards, students explore the business models, marketing strategies and global trade dynamics behind these luxury goods. Game On Geneva: AI, VR and Beyond Summer 1 Global Governance Known for its cutting-edge technology, diverse international community and rich cultural history, Geneva provides an ideal setting for aspiring game designers. Students explore emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR), which are increasingly being integrated into the video game industry. The course introduces different types of information systems and examines their positive and negative impacts on various aspects of our lives. Swiss Psychology and Digital Culture Studying psychology and digital culture in Geneva, Switzerland offers a unique blend of academic excellence and cultural richness, making it an ideal location for exploring the intersection of human behavior and the digital world. Geneva is home to numerous international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Health Organization, providing students with a global perspective on psychological issues and digital policy.
