What are some strategies a business owner can use to reduce anxiety now, and feel better prepared for the future? There is a lot of uncertainty for business owners right now, and instead of telling people to “relax” or the attitude of throwing up your hands because things are out of your control, have a plan. Find people to talk to; this can include industry peers, professionals, family and friends. Business owners often feel like they have to always put on a brave face and be strong, but being vulnerable and asking for help can really help manage stress and anxiety. Owners may not be able to eliminate or reduce the uncertainty and the stress/distress that it causes, but we can control how we deal with it. Practising self-care and prioritizing mental health will help these owners navigate challenging situations with clarity and calm. How can business owners and people leaders support their employees, when lost contracts and layoffs loom as a possibility if a trade war continues? What red flags should they look for to identify stress and anxiety in others?
Job insecurity is one of the most stressful situations workers can face. Business owners should be honest and transparent in their communication to help build trust and connection. While job security can never be guaranteed, it is OK to acknowledge the stress of the situation and pay attention to worker distress. This can look like: • Unexplained absences
• Workers becoming socially withdrawn • Changes in mood and/or energy level • Inability to concentrate • Big emotions (anger, sadness, easily frustrated) • Indications of substance use
If you notice these changes, approach a worker out of care and concern to determine if they need or want support. This can just be a sounding board to vent or they may need additional supports, such as a distress hotline, local mental health services, etc. LT
