Who can register? If the parents are married to each other or are in a civil partnership with each other, either one can register on their own. If the parents are not married or are not civil partners with each other, both parents must attend together. If the parent who is registering the birth does not speak English, they must bring someone who is able to translate for them. It is not necessary to bring the baby to the appointment with you. You will need to provide the following information: • Place and date of the baby’s birth • Full name and sex of the baby • Parents’ full names and address/ addresses • Place and date of birth for both parents • Date of the parents’ marriage or civil partnership (if applicable) • Parents’ occupations • Mother’s maiden name (if applicable). Please bring the following documents with you: • A proof of identity for each parent (e.g. passport, birth certicate, deed poll, driving licence) • Paperwork issued by the hospital proving that the birth has occurred (e.g. any hospital discharge papers).

4

You do not need to bring the following documents with you, but it is helpful if you are able to provide: Proof of marital status, if relevant (e.g. a marriage or civil partnership certicate). Birth certificate The birth certicate contains both the baby’s and the parents’ details. All birth certicates cost £11 and you can purchase as many as you need. Lambeth currently offer a free exclusively designed baby gift if you purchase 4 or more certicates. Payment is made when you book your appointment. You can purchase further copies at any time through our website https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/ births-deaths-ceremonies-citizenship . Please note that legislative changes can increase the cost of certicates at any time.

You need to book an appointment online to register a birth at Lambeth Register Ofce: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/births- deaths-ceremonies-citizenship .

We do not offer a walk-in service; appointments are compulsory.

I cannot find any documents. Can we still register a birth? It is extremely helpful if you are able to bring a proof of identity and the paperwork issued by the hospital with you, but you can still register if you are not able to bring these documents. Can I reschedule my appointment? You can reschedule your appointment using the link in your online booking conrmation email. What should I do if I am running late for my appointment? If you are running later than 10 minutes, you will unfortunately have to rebook your appointment at a later date.

7

What is shown on the birth certificate? The birth certicate has the baby’s name, date and place of birth. It also contains parents’ details, including their names, place of birth, occupation and address. Birth certicates can be purchased at the appointment if you have not already done so online. I want to change my child’s name on their birth certificate. It is not always possible to change a child’s name on their birth certicate. A child’s

forenames (but not surname) can be changed within one year after registration only. For further information please visit: https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/ births-deaths-ceremonies- citizenship A child’s surname (but not forenames) can only be changed if the birth is reregistered, or the father’s name is added to a birth certicate. name on their birth certicate.

cannot be added if your circumstances change. If

Naming Ceremonies

A Naming Ceremony is an occasion for parents, family, and friends to pledge their love and commitment to a child. It is an opportunity to celebrate the birth of a new baby or to welcome an adoptive child, or stepchild into a new relationship and to form a bond within an extended family. A Naming Ceremony allows supporting adults, grandparents, and older siblings to offer assurance and guidance through their promises to your child. You can choose poems or readings to enhance the ceremony and may present your child with a special gift to mark the occasion. Naming Ceremonies can be arranged by any parent, from any cultural background and with any spiritual or religious beliefs. There is no age limit to a Naming Ceremony and more than one child may be named at the same time

Prices for Naming Ceremonies are available upon request.

Infant Immunisation

Why do children need vaccinations? Vaccinations protect children from serious illness and potentially deadly diseases when they are very young, through their school years, and as adults. Across the world, vaccines have saved millions of lives. However, if people stop having vaccines, it is possible for infectious diseases to quickly spread again. How do vaccines work? Vaccines work by imitating an infection (the invasion and growth of a germ, like a virus or bacteria, in the body) and teaching the body to create special ghters called antibodies that protect it from disease. It’s much safer for the body to learn this through vaccination than by catching the disease and treating it. Once the body learns how to ght a disease through vaccination, it can often protect your child for many years. Keeping children safe from disease and illness According to the World Health Organization ( www. who.int ) vaccinations prevent more than 3.5 million deaths every year from diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, u and measles. Since vaccines were introduced in the UK, diseases like smallpox and tetanus, which used to kill or disable millions of people, have now disappeared or are seen very rarely. Other diseases like measles and diphtheria have been reduced by up to 99.9% since their vaccines were introduced.

12

However, if people stop having vaccines, it is possible for infectious diseases to quickly spread again. It is important that vaccines are given on time for the best protection, but if your child has missed a vaccine, you can contact your GP to catch up Who can get free NHS vaccinations? Every child is entitled to NHS vaccinations, free of charge. Speak to your GP or check your child’s red book to see if they are up to date on their vaccinations.

Does my child need to be registered with a GP to receive their routine vaccinations?

If your child is not registered with a GP, they are still entitled to free vaccinations. Anyone in England can register with a GP surgery, free of charge. You do not need any proof of address or immigration status, ID or an NHS number. Where can I get more information about children’s vaccinations? Please contact a GP surgery, or look online at: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/nhs- vaccinations-and-when-to-have-them/ .
