Job Description: The Deputy Energy Manager is within the Sustainability Team. Based within the Finance, Infrastructure and Commercial Services Division, the Sustainability Team are a major contributor to delivering on the University’s Strategy 2030 commitment to ‘lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis.’ The team has responsibility for delivering on the University’s net zero and net environmental gain targets and this job will assist managing with the work relating to reducing scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions.
Main purpose of the job The Deputy Energy Manager is responsible for planning and monitoring the University’s energy consumption and utility expenditure. They will assist the Head of Carbon and Energy in the development and delivery of programmes, projects and policies that make a major contribution to achieving the University’s net zero target. As a member of the Carbon and Energy Team, the role holder will play a key role in identifying, implementing, monitoring and reviewing strategies, policies and projects to reduce the University’s carbon emissions and utility consumption.

Communication and Liaison • Develop high quality relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels. • Represent the University externally on local, national and international groups. • Seek opportunities for collaborative working internally and externally including setting up and leading networks and groups and cross- university projects. • Proactively engage with stakeholders across the University to promote and embed a culture of sustainability. Provide specialist advice and support to colleagues across the University on utilities matters. Decision Making • Set priorities for utility management to ensure that standards and targets are met. • Review best practice and innovations and advise on suitability for introduction. • Decide on prioritisation of own work. Analysis and Reporting • Monitors performance against the
University’s carbon and utility reduction targets, analysing and interpreting data, providing regular feedback and progress reports on the overall status of projects and recommendations for improvements. • Establishes and monitors key performance indicators and regularly reviews performance against external benchmarks. • Responsible for the reporting of carbon and utility data internally and externally. People Management • Direct the Data Analysts in the aspects of their role that relate to validating and recharging utility invoices and data input. • Support skills development amongst key internal and external stakeholders to build their engagement, capacity and capabilities to contribute to the delivery of the University’s carbon net zero commitments. As part of this, design and deliver workshops, webinars, training and guidance for staff. This job description summarises the main duties and accountabilities of the post and is not comprehensive. Planning and Organising Resources • Assist in the planning, development
implementation of a long-term strategy in respect of energy management, utilities procurement and utility reduction projects. • Provide budget forecast reports on utilities consumption and costs at University and sub- University level. • Responsible for managing specific projects and initiatives. • Contribute to resource and budget planning for the utilities and carbon reduction budgets, and ensure products and outputs are delivered to time and budget. • Manage procurement and contracts to ensure value for money for the University. • Work closely with colleagues in the collegiate University and externally, to identify collaborative opportunities, maximise synergies and put together bids for internal and external funding.
Main duties and accountabilities • Be a subject matter expert for utility management and procurement.
• Lead the day-to-day management of the University’s utilities budget and consumption,
including procurement, metering, bill validation, recharging, forecasting and reporting.
• Identify energy saving opportunities and prepare business cases to gain support and financial investment. • Lead the design, delivery and management of the utility metering strategy. • Undertake detailed energy consumption profile and utility invoice analysis, identifying anomalies, providing recommendations and
Problem Solving • Gather and analyse quantitative and qualitative data and present recommendations through briefings, presentations and reports.
