Saica, a recycled paper manufacturing company, has commenced con- struction of its new corrugated board factory in Barcelona, Spain. The new facility is expected to require an investment of more than $107.8 million and is scheduled to commence operations in 2025. The project is part of Saica’s long-term commitment to the south- ern European packaging market aimed at meeting growing market de- mands and offering sustainable packaging solutions.

pharmaceutical, distillery, pesticide, brewery, cosmetic, lubricant, edible oil, food and ancil- lary industries. Leveraging advanced software, the Guard- ian OLP system reportedly enables swift and precise comparisons between pre-press files or scanned press samples and the custom- er-approved originals. In a matter of seconds, even the slightest variations in print quality are automatically detected and highlighted. A notable challenge Maharshi encoun- tered was addressing variations in export jobs, particularly in languages such as Arabic or French. The significance of even the tiniest punctuation mark became apparent due to its potential to alter meanings. Recognizing this, Maharshi embraced au- tomation to eliminate human intervention from the equation. This strategic shift not only resulted in a significant reduction in rejection rates as compared to manual checks but also drastically reduced the time required for ex- amination and minimized waste, according to the company.

The development of the new facility follows the opening of a new research, development and innovation center in Spain for the pack- aging industry in November 2023. Located near Zaragoza, the center features testing equipment to develop new products. It also enables customers to explore corrugated board, flexible packaging and asso- ciated materials. Saica’s new corrugated board factory is being developed in the Can Margarit industrial estate located in the municipality of Sant Esteve Sesrovires in Catalonia, Barcelona. The company acquired the land in 2010 and played a key role in developing the industrial estate, currently home to major companies such as Decathlon and Amazon. In 2018, the company developed a warehouse for finished products at the industrial estate. The new corrugated board factory will replace Saica’s existing facil- ities – Saica Pack El Prat and Saica Pack Barcelona. It will boost the ex- isting combined production from the two factories by up to 45 percent
