Yes, these are ashes. Sin does to boys and girls what fire does to wood. It destroys usefulness. Do you see anything wrong with this clean, straight stick? No, and you could easily make something useful out of it, if you had the proper tools. But you would find it very difficult to make any thing useful out if this burned and crooked stick. People are like sticks. Some people be come Christians early and give their lives to the Lord to be used by Him. Others wait until sin has so marred their lives that there is nothing left to give God but the ashes of a wasted life. This is the reason that God tells us in Ecclesiastes 12:1: “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.” God wants boys and girls to accept Christ while they are young, and then He can take their whole lives and really use them.

thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might,” and that means not just when we go to church, but all of the time. This is what ¡God explained to the children of Israel. Lesson Story: God said to them that the parents were to teach His words to their children in the homes. They were to sit down and talk to the children about the things of God; they were to talk to them when they were walking with them and when they were lying down and when they were rising up. This meant that the fathers and mothers were to keep their children re minded of God and of His words all of the time. Then God said also that the people were to bind His laws for a sign upon their hands and for frontlets before their eyes. What does this mean? It means that they must not do anything at any time that was not according to the will of God, and that they must not think of anything that would be against His will. And God said next that the people were to write His law upon the doorposts and on the city gates. This means that as the Lord’s people went in and out of their homes and through the city, they should think of the laws of God and obey them. As God told His children to do then, He wants us to do n ow .. How different our homes and cities would be if all of us really thought about His words and obeyed them! Object Lesson P laying with F ire Objects: A straight stick, a crooked stick burned at both ends, and a glass of ashes. Lesson: What is the matter with this stick? (Hold up the burned one.) Samuel was only a small boy when he was brought to the house of God, and he be came oife of the greatest prophets. Daniel was still a youth when he chose to serve God in a heathen king’s court. The little maid who told Naaman’s wife about the prophet in Israel who could heal the lep rosy was but a young girl, but she knew God and trusted Him. To “ remember” God in one’s youth does not mean merely to acknowledge Him as Creator. It means to accept His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as a personal Saviour, and to be forgiven and freed from sin. “ Remember no
