turning a water wheel with their feet. In the promised land, the children of Israel were going to get the water for their grain by a still easier way, for the water was to come to them as rain from the sky. Where there is plenty of water, the people do not need to worry about whether their crops will grow. That is the reason that the land was called “ a land that floweth with milk and honey.” One of the names by which the Lord Jesus is sometimes called is “ The Water of Life.” Nothing can live without water. How freely God has given water to provide food to make our bodies strong! But more important still is the Living Water which He provides for our souls, in giving us the Lord Jesus as our Saviour. As the children of Israel stood there ready to go into the promised land, God reminded them of the laws that He had given them, certain things that were good to do and certain things that were evil. A blessing was to be given if they obeyed the laws, and a curse—a punishment—if they disobeyed. Today we have these same laws of right and wrong, and God’s blessing will be with us, too, if we obey His laws.

out that the very physiography of the promised land was divinely and providen tially arranged for. the training of the chosen nation. The rich irrigated plains of Babylon and Egypt were not the places in which men waxed rich in faith and love toward God. It is rather in places in which men are more directly dependent upon those elements that they cannot control that they learn more perfectly to depend upon the God of heaven. Miss Slattery tells of watching a dog trotting along with a paper in his mouth. His owner, a boy about twelve years old, walked behind him. A boy across the street espied the dog and gave a quick, sharp whistle. The dog pricked up his ears, and in a moment he started across and reached the middle of the street, when his owner saw what he was doing and whistled. The dog started back. The boy across the street gave another whistle, held up some thing in his hand and called, “ Come here, sir.” The dog started toward him, when he heard his owner’s whistle again and started back. Everybody on the street looked and laughed. I wish you could have seen that dog race once toward one and then toward the other. He did not know what to do, nor which way to go. He could not follow both; he had to choose between them. At last a decided whistle and a loud command from his mas ter brought him back, and he trotted along slowly behind his master. There are many times when we get into about the place of that small dog .—Sunday School Times. Object Lesson C hoosing or L osing

Objects: A saucer of sand, a small bag of cement, a glass of water, and a small block of cement. Lesson: Life is made up of many choices. The one who makes right choices builds a strong, fine life, the one who makes wrong choices fails. Joshua realized this truth, and he said in Joshua 24:15: “ Choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I hold in my left hand a saucer filled with sand, and in my right hand a block of cement. Until the right choice is made, our life is like this sand. The sand is easily moved, and would never by itself be used for the foundation of a building. If this sand is ever to be strong and de pendable, it must have something added to it. Last week I took some sand like this, added cement and water to it, and poured it into a mold. This solid block of cement came out of the mold. The making of this block of cement teaches me something about the making of a successful life. Christ can do for us what this sack of cement did for the sand. We must accept,Him as our per sonal Saviour and take Him into our heart if we are to be firm and strong. Water is another thing that goes into the mak ing of a block of cement. This water re minds me of God’s Word. W e need to

laws were given, the ch ild re n of Israel were on their way from Egypt to the promised land. God was preparing them now to enter this land. Lesson Story: The land that they had come from was a rich land. Through

the center of Egypt ran the great river Nile. Each year when the river over flowed its banks, water spread all over the land. The people gathered it in ditches, and when they needed it to water their fields, they paddled it into the fields by O /V lS lO *
