choose God’s Word, if our lives are to be successful. “The word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isa. 40:8). Joshua was a great leader for the people of God, because he made the right choices. Every true leader must choose wisely. The Lord Jesus Christ wanted Peter to realize that there was a way to be strong, and He said: “ Thou art Simon the son of Jona: Thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A-stone” (John 1:42). We know of how Peter’s life was changed until he became a “ stone,” a person on whom God could depend. Choose Christ and the Bible, and your life will be strong. Golden Text: “Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day” (Deut. 8:11). Outline and Exposition I. T he D anger C ontained in B lessings (11-17) R e j e c t i n g God’s commandments and His statutes, one may forget God entirely (v. 11). It seems in credible that a people with Israel’s his tory should ever forget the One who had wrought great wonders on their behalf. It would seem that their bondage, their task masters, and their toil in Egypt could never be forgotten. But God knew the human heart and how quickly it turns back to the land of bondage as soon as the bond age itself is relieved. 'Generally speaking, men desire freedom only from the pain of bondage, not from the environment of bondage. In a New Testament illustra tion of this fact, the rich man who died and went to Hades and who called to Abraham, asked merely that the conditions surrounding him might be changed; ap parently he was satisfied to be separated from God, if only the conditions of his place of existence might be bettered (cf. Lk. 16:19-31). In Israel’s case, the very blessings which God gave could become a snare to the people (vs. 12-14). While receiving good things from the hand of the Lord, their hearts were lifted up in pride and a sense of their self-sufficiency. The natural evil of the human heart is revealed in pride of possession of things, goodly houses, large flocks, gold in abundance. BLACKBOARD LESSON

“Believing is Seeing 99 By JAMBS H. McCONKEY The faith which yields shall see and understand . . . is the theme of this pamphlet. It brings rest to either saint or sinner. Free—as the Lord provides. Write Silver Publishing Society Dept. K 423 Bessemer Bldg. Pittsburgh, Pa.

All through Scripture, pride is pictured as being exceedingly hateful to God. The Lord reminds His people of who He was (vs. 15, 16). He was the One who had brought them out of Egypt, had led them through the wilderness, and had given them water and food. How strange it is that they should have had to be warned impressively against forgetting God ! But it is not strange when we re member our own hearts, and how quickly we forget past deliverances and proudly imagine that our blessings have been se cured without God’s aid and grace. The peculiar experiences through which the Lord’s people had passed were all ar ranged by God for the purpose of hum bling and proving them, in order that, even tually, good might come to them (v. 16). Danger lay in the people’s taking credit to themselves for the possession of God’s gifts, saying, in effect, “M y power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth” (v. 17). If the people secured what they had without God, then they were under no obligation to remember Him or to obey Him. If they could rid them selves of bondage, if they could draw water from the flinty rock, if they could secure bread to sustain them in the wilderness, then of course they needed nothing from Jehovah. Likewise today, the blessings given by grace should lead the believer to acknowledge God’s goodness. But, alas, these mercies divinely bestowed may cease to be benefits at all to the one who, in pride, declares he is under no obligation to God for their possession. II. T he S ource of B lessing (18) The children of Israel were to remem ber that the Lord was the Source of all their blessings. He would give to them freely, because of His covenant with their fathers. Hence their blessings would be given, not for their sakes, or because of their goodness, but because of God’s faith fulness to His word. The source of all blessing for the Chris tian, either individual or collective, lies not in the Christian himself, but in God’s covenant with His Son, Jesus Christ, in whom the believer is “ accepted in the be loved” (Eph. 1:6).
