be that many o f us would be marked for distinction?— J. H. J owett . Faith hath cause to take courage from our very afflictions. The devil is but a whetstone to sharpen the faith and pa tience of the saints. I know he but heweth and polisheth stones for the New Jeru salem.— S amuel R utherford . "Thine is . . . the power” (Matt. 6:13). The essential condition of spiritual power is union with Christ. The power of which we speak is power for practical godliness, personal holiness, and effective service. This power is not from ourselves. It is divine power. Originally God put power into the hands of man, but he lost it at the fall. Now God has put power in Christ. He does not give it to each one separately, *but He has bestowed it on Christ . . . There it is eternally safe, and there it is for all the members of His body. But while it is there—and there for us— we cannot have it apart from vital union with Him.— E van H opkins . God does not let out His attributes. His power cannot be rented. It cannot be de tached from His presence. — S amuel C hadw ick . SEPTEMBER 13 Worthy of Glory "G ive unto the Lord, the glory due unto his name” (Psa. 96:8). Who is God save our God? Most merci ful, yet most just; most hidden, yet most near; most beautiful, yet most strong; stable, yet incomprehensible; never young, and never old; ever in action, yet ever at rest; still gathering, yet lacking nothing; supporting, filling and overshadowing all things. . . . Say unto my soul, “ I am thy Salvation.” Say it so that I may hear. I will run after this voice, and take hold on Thee.— A ugustine . SEPTEMBER 12 The Source of Power “Save me, 0 God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. . . . For the Lord heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners” (Psa. 69:1, 33). “ O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee.” Here where deep calleth unto deep, and the noise of . . . cataracts of trouble deafens me— here, just where I am, from the land of fear, the land'of suspense, will I remember Thee. And instantly the Lord commands His loving-kindness.— A m y C armichael . As He watches our struggles, His ear is quick to catch our cry, that in the hour of need we may be sustained by His mercy and strengthened by His grace. —J. M uir K elly . SEPTEMBER 14 He Hears

too, too solid flesh” we cannot see the chariots of the Lord’s host as did Elisha’s servant when his eyes were miraculously opened. W e cannot see the Angel of the Lord encamping round about us. Our Lord could in the twinkling of an eye have commanded to His aid twelve legions of angels had He chosen to do so. . . . He is an exemplar to us. The material is only secondarily important; it is the spiritual and invisible that counts, “for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” —Sunday School Times. "Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (Jas. 4:4). Noah built and voyaged alone. His neighbors laughed at his strangeness and perished in style. Abraham wandered and worshiped alone; Sodomites smiled at the simple shepherd, followed the fashion, and fed the flames. Daniel dined and prayed alone. Elijah sacrificed and witnessed alone. Jeremiah prophesied and wept alone. Jesus lived and died alone. And, of the lonely way His desciples should walk, He said, “ Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”— The Morning Star. God’s method of cleansing is the same today as in the prophet’s day. Isaiah con fessed the sin which was revealed to him, then God could cleanse him. It is not a matter of pleading and praying for cleans ing as so many do today, but it is a mat ter of confessing sin (cf. 1 John 1:9). But why did one of the seraphim use a coal ? Why did he not take the prophet to the laver and wash his lips with the water for cleansing? Or why did he not use the blood standing in the basin beside the al tar? Why did he use a coal? The fire on that altar came from heaven, as the first fire on the altar was started by God Himself, and the blood of sprinkling had been sprinkled on that fire. There was blood in that fire which was used by the angel as he touched the prophet’s lips. . . . It is not as we pray that He cleanses, but as we confess our sins.—From God’s Fellow Workers by L. L. L egters . SEPTEMBER 17 Fire and Blood “ Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar” (Isa. 6:6).
