SEPTEMBER 20 Can Love Be Trusted? "But whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall he safe” (Prov. 29:25). "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not he afraid” (Isa. 12:2). In the measure in which we truly recog nize Him as our Lord and ourselves as His possession will it be easy to “put our trust” in Him. If the shepherd purchase a flock of sheep, does he not intend to provide for and take care of them? And the more they cost, the most carefully will he tend them. Our Good Shepherd has paid for us an infinite price. . . . Well may we “ put our trust” in Him who loves us with love so unique and unparalleled I —J. H udson T aylor . He that feeds His birds cannot starve His babes.— M atthew H enry . SEPTEMBER 21 The Divine Verdict "If we say that we have no sin, we de ceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). There is only one thing we can do, and that is to accept God’s verdict that we are sinners by nature, and that we are sinners by choice, and that God has declared us, therefore, under the divine decree of His wrath. W e sin solely because we are sin ners. W e must live in the court room. That is the solution, for it will bring us to the very heart of victory in Christ Jesus. — D onald G rey B arnhouse . Jesus claimed to be God. Men and wom en have trusted Him as such and found that He was. Jesus claimed that His death would save sinners. Sinners have put that death to the test and have been saved. Jesus claimed that He would conquer the grave by rising from it. W e know that He did that, because we have the living Christ, and not the memory of a dead Christ in our experience. The proof, therefore, that Jesus was also God is found in the very warp and woof of the New Testament, and the experience of the Christian church during these nineteen centuries. Christianity stands by this great proof. —W . G raham S croggie . SEPTEMBER 22 God Manifest in the Flesh “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). “ All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for re proof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16). The Bible, as seen by Christian faith, is not a book of speculation and guesses, a book which represents the groping of the human mind after God. It is a revelation, the discovery God has made of Himself to man. What it offers us is not man’s thoughts about God, but God’s thoughts about man. It rolls back the veil that hides the unseen from view, and where the torch of reason fails, it sheds a light so clear and true upon the mysteries of existence here SEPTEMBER 23 No Guess Work

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall he filled” (Matt. 5:6). “I f thou seek him, he will be found of thee” (2 Chron. 28:9). If we want God as much as the astron omer Herschel wanted .the distant stars, with such sincerity that he would sit all night on a balcony in the wintry winds with an awkward telescope; if we want Him as much as Edison wanted an electric filament, so that he would experiment with six hundred different substances that he might get his radiant light—if we hunger like that for God, we will not complain about difficulty; we will quit arguing and postponing and begin this very hour to seek H im !— R obert M. Is there a soul who died, Who died because of me, Forever shut away From heaven and from Thee? Is there a soul who died Because I did not speak, Because I did not point The way his feet should seek? Lord, let me not forget That precious soul who died, That soul for love of whom Thy Son was crucified.
