Scott started his business in 1968 with a 1958 Massey Harris “Model ‘92” combine. One year later he bought a new Massey 410 Combine, a 1957 GMC grain truck and a 1957 Chevrolet pickup. He married Linda in 1973. 10 years later in 1983 the business became S&L Farms Inc. Through the early years Scott updated many different Massey combines but in 1979 he bought his 1st JD combine, a JD 7720. From then on, he ran nothing but JD combines. By 1985 S&L Farms was running 10-12 combines and harvesting from Texas to Canada. Many changes took place during the 49 years of business. From tractors and grain carts, to semi tractors with trailers instead of 10 wheelers, cab, air and radio was considered luxury before today’s world of push buttons and auto-steer. Scott remembers when you used to load your combine in the bed of your truck before equipment trailers were around. In 2001 Scott had a life changing pick-up accident that resulted in immobility and eyesight issues. Scott endured a hospital stay of 6.5 months, however this was the only time he had ever been away from the harvest. Life on the harvest was a grand experience and a lifestyle that gave him excitement every morning. No other way of life would have given him such satisfaction and accomplishment. Scott and Linda have 4 children, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Foremost in their lives is having Christ as their personal Savior. He is the center of their life and business. To everyone who has been a part of this 49-year journey, whether as an employee, a friend or customer on the harvest, Scott and Linda would like to say thank you and invite everyone to come celebrate the end of a chapter in Imperial NE on March 1, 2017. Sincerely, Scott & Linda Payne S&L Farms
