The film is directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) and is inspired by the famous novel and Broadway musical of the same name, which debuted on Broadway in 2003. Wicked received a flood of praise and positive reactions from audiences, becoming the highest- grossing Broadway musical adaptation to date, surpassing Les Miserables. The film earned over $750 million worldwide, with a production budget of approximately $150 million. It also won two Academy Awards and was nominated for hundreds of other prestigious awards. Wicked stars the talented Cynthia Erivo, who has won an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award and is known for her role in Harriet and the Broadway musical The Color Purple. The film also features global superstar and Grammy-winning singer Ariana Grande, along with Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
