As we turn the pages of May, we pause with reverence and gratitude to honor the brave individuals who wear the uniform—and the families who serve right alongside them. Military Appreciation Month holds deep personal meaning for me. As part of a military family, I understand that service doesn’t just belong to the one in uniform—it’s a shared sacrifice. The early mornings, the missed birthdays, the empty seats at dinner, and the long nights of worry are all part of the commitment that families make. It's a quiet kind of strength that too often goes unrecognized. To every service member, veteran, spouse, child, and caregiver—I see you. I thank you. Your courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication shape the very fabric of our nation. DEAR READERS,

God blessed us with you! Your purpose on this earth was to be an amazing wife and mother! Mommy, you have been that and more! You absolutely parented your 4 girls based on our personalities and you never showed favoritism to the four of us! You and daddy set boundaries and standards for us and never compromised on how you expected us to behave! It always amazes me how you can call us in the exact moment that we may be experiencing a "mommy moment"! We tease you by saying, mommy, how did you know I was having a bad day and you say, "I know because you are my child! You taught us to be global citizens by treating everyone kind and you never let anyone that spent Christmas with us leave without a gift, even if you didn't know that they were attending. Mommy, you are the original #Akergirl and you and daddy instilled Aker pride in all four of us! Thank you for being the gift that you are, Delores Aker, we are so grateful for your guidance, love, expectation, and standards! Happy Mother's Day Mommy! A TRIBUTE TO MY MOM

EXEMPLARY SERVICE FEATURE: SENATOR NICK CHARLES
As the nation observes Military Appreciation Month this May, Maryland State Senator Nick Charles stands as a living testament to the values of service, sacrifice, and steadfast dedication to community. From his days in the cockpit to his current role on the Senate floor, Charles embodies the ethos of duty—not just to his country, but to the community that raised him: Prince George’s County. From the Flight Line to the Frontlines of Legislation: Senator Nick Charles Champions Military Service, Community Pride, and a Brighter Future for Prince George’s County
Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Prince George’s County, Charles is a proud graduate of Largo High School and a product of the county's public school system. His deep roots in the region have never wavered, shaping both his character and his political compass. “It is both an honor and a privilege to represent the community where I grew up,” Charles frequently says—a sentiment that is more than just rhetoric. It is the driving force behind his work.

EXEMPLARY SERVICE FEATURE: SENATOR NICK CHARLES
In the 2025 legislative session, Charles took aim at some of the county’s most pressing issues: skyrocketing energy costs, educational disparities, and federal layoffs that disproportionately affected Prince George’s workforce. His efforts helped secure more than $187 million in capital investments and over $56 million in operational funding for local projects—including improvements to Largo High School, the Community Boys and Girls Club of Capitol Heights, and the Forestville Healthcare Center. “These aren’t just numbers,” Charles insists. “They represent safer neighborhoods, better healthcare access, thriving schools, and real opportunities for our children.” A Lawmaker Powered by Purpose Among the eight impactful bills Senator Charles passed this year is the Next Generation Energy Act (SB937), which provides $200 million in energy refunds to residents while positioning Maryland as a national leader in renewable energy. He also sponsored legislation aimed at improving foster care, ensuring paid leave for cancer screenings, and increasing pedestrian safety through smart speed enforcement. But one of the most personal pieces of legislation he fought for was SB683: The Protect Our Federal Workers Act, offering interest-free loans to federal employees impacted by mass layoffs or shutdowns. “Prince George’s County has one of the highest concentrations of federal workers,” Charles explains. “When D.C. sneezes, we catch a cold. This bill is about having our workers’ backs when they need it most.” Veteran Advocacy Year-Round Charles’ military background continues to shape his policy decisions. He successfully championed SB541, allowing veterans’ organizations to host instant lottery ticket machines to raise sustainable funds for programs serving those who’ve worn the uniform. He also secured funding for American Legion Post No. 248—ensuring these vital hubs for veterans remain strong. SERVICE MAGAZINE 9
EXEMPLARY SERVICE FEATURE: SENATOR NICK CHARLES
Military Appreciation Month is more than a calendar event for Charles—it’s a reminder of his dual mission. “I never stopped serving,” he says. “I just changed the uniform.”
His involvement doesn’t end with policy. As a member of American Legion Post 275 and a board member for organizations like Greater Baden Medical Services and Community Legal Services of Prince George’s County, he’s on the ground, addressing healthcare access, legal aid, and housing insecurity. Legislating with Legacy in Mind As a father of two, Charles often speaks of legacy—not just the one he’ll leave for his children, but the one he’s building for all families in Prince George’s County. His community outreach spans career expos, food distributions, expungement events, and back-to-school drives, reinforcing his belief that legislative work must be complemented by community action. He’s also passionate about supporting youth innovation and economic mobility. Through initiatives like the Design Lab Incubator Project and Inncuvate Innovation Studio, Charles is helping equip young Prince Georgians with entrepreneurial and technical skills. Standing Strong, Looking Forward Senator Charles is more than a politician—he is a reflection of the values that define Military Appreciation Month: courage, service, resilience, and commitment to others. As a proud veteran and even prouder Prince Georgian, his service continues, not on the battlefield, but in the budget meetings, committee hearings, and community events that shape everyday lives. As he puts it: “Service didn’t end when I left the military. It just began a new chapter—one where the mission is to make Prince George’s County stronger, safer, and more prosperous for generations to come.” SERVICE MAGAZINE 10

May is Military Appreciation Month, a special time for those in and out of the military. This month, Service Magazine honors the service and sacrifice of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, Space Force and National Guard as well as the contributions of their spouses and families. Supporting a Loved One with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Suicidal Ideation
DR. ROSELYN AKER-BLACK
Living with or loving someone who is struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicidal ideation can be overwhelming, heartbreaking, and at times, confusing. As a clinical psychologist and someone who comes from a military family, I’ve witnessed firsthand the silent battles that take place beyond the uniform or after the trauma. These experiences leave marks that aren’t always visible—but are always real. PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. While it is often associated with combat veterans, it can also affect survivors of abuse, natural disasters, serious accidents, or any traumatic event. Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts of ending one’s own life and is often a sign of deep emotional pain.
Recognizing the Signs Understanding how PTSD and suicidal thoughts show up is the first step in offering compassionate support. Here are some common behaviors that may signal someone is struggling: Avoidance: The person may avoid people, places, conversations, or situations that remind them of the trauma. For example, a veteran might avoid crowds or loud noises like fireworks. Hypervigilance: Constantly feeling on edge, scanning surroundings for danger, difficulty sleeping, and being easily startled are signs the nervous system is on high alert. Isolation: Withdrawing from loved ones, losing interest in previously enjoyed activities, or spending long periods alone may reflect emotional numbness or a fear of being misunderstood. Irritability or Anger: Quick temper, mood swings, or snapping at others without clear reason can be signs of unresolved inner turmoil. Expressions of Hopelessness or Worthlessness: Saying things like “everyone would be better off without me” or “I’m just a burden” are red flags for suicidal ideation.

What You Can Do as a Family Member I t’s natural to feel helpless or unsure of what to say—but your presence and response can make a profound difference. Here are steps you can take: Listen Without Judgment Let them talk—without rushing to fix, diagnose, or compare. Silence can be powerful. A simple, “I’m here, and I care,” can be more healing than advice. Encourage Professional Help Gently suggest therapy or a visit to a mental health professional. Say, “You don’t have to go through this alone—let’s find someone who can help.” Create a Safe Environment Remove any potential means of self-harm (like firearms or prescription medications), if possible. Express concern openly: “I noticed you’ve been really down lately. I care about you and want to make sure you’re safe.” Learn About the Condition Educate yourself on PTSD and suicidal ideation. The more you understand, the more supportive you can be. Set Boundaries and Practice Self-Care Supporting someone else’s mental health shouldn’t come at the expense of your own. Seek counseling for yourself if needed, and take breaks when necessary. Supporting a Loved One with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Suicidal Ideation

Supporting a Loved One with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Suicidal Ideation
If You Are the One Experiencing These Symptoms You are not broken. You are not alone. Your pain is valid, and healing is possible. Speak to Someone: Whether it’s a therapist, a trusted friend, or a support group, let someone in. Silence can deepen suffering. Avoid Isolation: Even if it’s just texting one friend or stepping outside for a few minutes, small connections can disrupt spirals of despair. Recognize Your Triggers: Awareness helps you prepare, cope, or plan around environments or topics that activate your trauma. Use Grounding Techniques: Deep breathing, naming five things you see, or touching something textured can help during moments of dissociation or panic. Create a Safety Plan: Know who to call, where to go, and what to do if suicidal thoughts become intense.

First things first: deep respect and gratitude to each and every one of you who serve—or have served. You are the reason freedom feels possible. I see you, I appreciate you, and I salute you. Now, let me be clear—I’m not a soldier. I haven’t worn the uniform. But I have stood alongside those who do. I’ve traveled overseas in direct support of our troops—on multiple stops in Germany, Kuwait, and yes, even Iraq while we were in active combat. I’ve looked into the eyes of warriors who hadn’t slept in days, cracked jokes to lighten the air between sirens, and shared quiet meals in CHUs. I don’t say that to earn stripes I haven’t fought for, but to share this: I know—just a little—what your world feels like. And I know that amidst the mental, emotional, and physical grind of service, your health is often the first thing to be sacrificed. The BYBD SuperYou™️ SuperSwap: Fueling the Troops for Energy, Focus & Stamina By: KUTlmaBy KUTImack. | @KUTImack. Service Magazine – May Issue
Which brings us here.
This month, I want to offer you three quick, powerful SuperSwaps—nutritional upgrades that don’t require a complete overhaul of your lifestyle. These are mission-ready tweaks—strategic adjustments to fuel your body for what the job demands: energy, focus, and stamina.
Let’s get into it.

SuperYou™ SuperSwap: Health Is Wealth: The Real Cost of Wellness vs. Illness
1. SuperSwap for ENERGY Swap: Sugary Energy Drinks → Natural Citrus + Sea Salt Hydration Why it matters: It’s tempting—especially on long shifts or during deployment—to lean on energy drinks. But here’s the deal: the sugar and artificial caffeine in those cans can give you a fast high…and a faster crash. That rollercoaster wreaks havoc on your metabolism, mood, and heart health. Not to mention dehydration, which zaps your strength and slows your reflexes. What to do instead: Create a citrus-hydration mix. It’s natural, replenishes electrolytes, and supports sustainable energy without the crash. Just squeeze half a lemon or lime into water, toss in a pinch of sea salt (not table salt), and drink it first thing in the morning—or mid-afternoon when your energy dips. You’ll notice better hydration, fewer jitters, and more steady stamina. Want to level it up? Add a teaspoon of honey and a few cucumber slices. It’s like nature’s Gatorade, without the sugar bomb.
Remember:
Energy
isn’t
about
stimulation. It’s about sustainability.

2. SuperSwap for FOCUS Swap: Grab-N-Go Pastries → Protein + Fat-Powered Focus Fuel Why it matters: If you’re starting your day with a donut, muffin, or toaster pastry, your brain is running on fumes by the time the mission starts. These quick carbs burn out fast, leaving your focus foggy and your blood sugar all over the map. The result? You’re distracted, agitated, and prone to mistakes. Not the mental clarity anyone needs in your line of work. What to do instead: Go for a protein + fat combo. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Think: A boiled egg + a handful of almonds A protein bar with under 5g of sugar Sliced apples with almond or peanut butter These pairings provide slow-digesting fuel that feeds your brain what it needs to stay alert, focused, and responsive. This isn’t about dieting—it’s about decision-making under pressure. Your brain deserves better gas in the tank.
Remember: Focus isn’t a luxury—it’s a lifeline.

3. SuperSwap for STAMINA Swap: Late-Night Heavy Meals → Early Evening Power Bowls Why it matters: When you’re constantly on the move, meals get pushed late. But eating heavy right before sleep doesn’t just mess with digestion—it kills stamina. You wake up groggy, your body still processing last night’s chow. And let’s be honest: most late-night meals aren’t exactly lean and green. What to do instead: Aim to eat your most nutrient-dense meal earlier in the evening, ideally 2-3 hours before sleep. Create a Power Bowl using what you have: A lean protein (chicken, tuna, beans, boiled eggs) A hearty base (quinoa, riced cauliflower or even sweet potatoes) A chopped colorful veg (spinach, peppers, carrots, broccoli, etc.) A healthy fat (olive oil drizzle, avocado, or nuts) Keep it simple, satisfying, and real. This kind of meal gives your body the nutrients it needs to rebuild while you sleep, so you wake up with more strength, fewer aches, and better stamina for whatever the next day throws your way.
Remember:
Stamina
starts
with
recovery.
