EXEMPLARY SERVICE FEATURE: SENATOR NICK CHARLES

In the 2025 legislative session, Charles took aim at some of the county’s most pressing issues: skyrocketing energy costs, educational disparities, and federal layoffs that disproportionately affected Prince George’s workforce. His efforts helped secure more than $187 million in capital investments and over $56 million in operational funding for local projects—including improvements to Largo High School, the Community Boys and Girls Club of Capitol Heights, and the Forestville Healthcare Center. “These aren’t just numbers,” Charles insists. “They represent safer neighborhoods, better healthcare access, thriving schools, and real opportunities for our children.” A Lawmaker Powered by Purpose Among the eight impactful bills Senator Charles passed this year is the Next Generation Energy Act (SB937), which provides $200 million in energy refunds to residents while positioning Maryland as a national leader in renewable energy. He also sponsored legislation aimed at improving foster care, ensuring paid leave for cancer screenings, and increasing pedestrian safety through smart speed enforcement. But one of the most personal pieces of legislation he fought for was SB683: The Protect Our Federal Workers Act, offering interest-free loans to federal employees impacted by mass layoffs or shutdowns. “Prince George’s County has one of the highest concentrations of federal workers,” Charles explains. “When D.C. sneezes, we catch a cold. This bill is about having our workers’ backs when they need it most.” Veteran Advocacy Year-Round Charles’ military background continues to shape his policy decisions. He successfully championed SB541, allowing veterans’ organizations to host instant lottery ticket machines to raise sustainable funds for programs serving those who’ve worn the uniform. He also secured funding for American Legion Post No. 248—ensuring these vital hubs for veterans remain strong. SERVICE MAGAZINE 9
