TRACK OUTLOOK - GIRLS The MRA girls’ track team is eagerly looking forward to getting back on the track and competing this year after a cancelled 2020 season. They hope to field a very competitive team and to continue their success of back- to- back state championships in 2018 and 2019. Coach Melanie Black and Pat Lovitt return a strong core of talented sprinters, distance runners, jumpers, and throwers. Gone from the team are some outstanding 2020 graduates, including state champion high jumpers Rivers Futral and Mae Mae Correro, All State distance runner Savannah McIntosh, pole vaulter Mollie Potter and discus thrower Jill Horner. However, the Lady Pats have some talented girls returning who plan to step up and fill these gaps. Leading the team once again will be a group of impressive sprinters, including senior Laurel Fulcher (2-time state champion in the 300 hurdles), sophomore Evie Ewing (2-time state champion in the 400 dash), and juniors Hunter Thompson and Lily Kate Farrar. In addition, strengthening the team this year will be nationally acclaimed sprinter Kennedi Sanders, a junior, who was the 2019 National Junior Olympic Champion in the 100 and 200 dashes. The Lady Pats will once again be blessed with talented distance runners, including seniors Everett Heard and Lydia Snopek, junior Sloane Vinson, and freshman Abi Alden Benton. These distance girls have been the foundation for the success of MRA’s track program, setting state and school records, and are working very hard to continue that standard of excellence. The team should also be solid in the field, led by juniors Sarah Carnathan (high jump and triple jump) and Presley Deruiter (triple jump), and sophomore Riley Hancock, who does all jumps and throws the discus. Also counted on heavily will be junior discus thrower and shot putter Sarah Margaret Seabrook, who was the 2019 state runner-up in the discus, and sophomore pole vaulter Hannah Potter. Hopefully, these girls can stay healthy and injury-free and field a strong team that will be in the hunt for another state championship for 2021. Brian Fugler is going into his second year as Junior Varsity head football coach. Prior to coming to MRA, Coach Fugler was the defensive coordinator for junior high football at Jackson Preparatory School. He served as an assistant basketball coach at Madison Ridgeland Academy before that. He also coached at Kirk Academy and Brookhaven Academy where he served various roles including head junior high football coach, assistant high school football coach, head girls basketball coach and head baseball coach. Coach Fugler received his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Southern Mississippi. He played baseball at Copiah Lincoln Community College.
