YEAR 9 – GENERAL MUSIC Status Compulsory Prerequisites None Periods per week

More specifically students will cover from the following areas of study: • The physiology of the human voice • Use of the voice as an instrument through group singing using popular songs • Rhythmic identification and sequencing • Melodic contours, leading to simple composition • Listening skills with exposure to many different types of musical styles • Identification of the main elements of music – use of music as a language Students are encouraged to continue or begin instrumental or vocal tuition and to join a performance group. Assessment There is a mixture of written and practical work throughout the course, which is assessed at various checkpoints without the need for a formal examination.

Four per week (1/3 of the year)

Description The Year 9 course is performance based. The aim of the course is to provide students with the skills to learn to play a woodwind or brass musical instrument. An instrument will be loaned to the student for the duration of the course. More specifically students will cover from the following areas of study: • Woodwind instruments – flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone • Brass instruments – trumpet, trombone • Ensemble skills • Care of instruments • Rhythm • Pitch • Musical symbols and notation Students are encouraged to continue or begin instrumental or vocal tuition and to join a performance group. Assessment Throughout the course students will be assessed with respect to playing ability, ensemble awareness, group and individual performing disciplines, and recognition of music notation.

Description The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge and technical skills to help them express themselves through the performance and composition of music. • Composing • Aural perception • Performance • Theory – historical overview with score reading Any student with an interest in music can pick up this course. It is of particular advantage to students with instrumental skills at any level. Students may be encouraged to submit work for NCEA Levels if they are of the required standard. Assessment Progress and achievement tests throughout the year for written, practical and compositional work.

musical language introduced in Year 9 with the instruments, and focuses more on the human voice. Young men all experience a change in their voices around this age, and this course will dispel some myths about what happens when that change occurs, and teaches the boys to use their ‘new’ voices.
