The most commonly used anesthetic in general anesthesia is 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) because of its many advantageous qualities. It positively modulates the inhibitory function of the neurotransmitter g-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (Giuseppe, 2000). Nearly everyone will have an operation under general anesthesia in their lifetime, yet people know little about what the drugs actually are and how they work. There is a dearth of discussion focused on the chemistry of anesthetics. Therefore, preliminary study of the chemistry of anesthetics, specifically propofol, will be discussed. It includes history of anesthetics, changes of the anesthetics, reaction mechanism, structure and properties of anesthetics, and analytical chemistry of anesthetics. Grant Worthington - Art Showcase
