u Investigative reports should be written in clear language so as to avoid ambiguity, misunderstanding, and the need for interpretation u One way to increase clarity is using jargon appropriately u Jargon is the use of words, terms, and phrases, peculiar to a particular group or trade that is typically not understood or may even be meaningless to those outside the group.

Jargon can alienate and confuse those unfamiliar with the terminology.

The key to proper use of jargon is to be aware of your audience and write to their knowledge base. When in doubt, spell it out.
