CWU Board of Trustees Meeting Agenda | May 2025

Dr. Beng has a long and distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments since completing his Ph.D. in 2011 from the University of Arkansas. More specifically, since arriving at CWU he has published 26 peer- reviewed research articles. Many of these intellectual contributions have been published in rigorous journals such as the Royal Society for Chemistry . This level of research productivity, on par or beyond Research-1 institutions, has been consistent while diligently maintaining a strong teaching load in CWU’s teacher/scholar model. A remarkable observation regarding Dr. Beng’s research is how he integrates, involves, and lifts students to higher levels of inquisition and research accomplishments. With dozens of student papers published and dozens of student presentations at regional and national scientific conferences, he has earned over 30 research awards for students here at CWU. Additionally, he has secured several Faculty Student Grants, further supporting his commitment to providing hands-on research opportunities for students. This evidence shows a strong desire for research impact on students. Dr. Beng’s work has cemented a strong reputation for scholarly output from CWU in general and the Department of Chemistry in particular. His voluminous letters of support from colleagues and former students highlight his dedication to advancing knowledge while fostering a collaborative and inclusive research environment. These letters, which come from a diverse array of sources including university colleagues, private sector/industry leaders (e.g., Pfizer, Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute), regional high schools, major R1 institutions and students consistently tell a powerful narrative of the impact of Dr. Beng’s work. In one of the letters of support, a distinguished scientist at UC-Berkeley was asked to recruit Dr. Beng to other universities saying, “On three occasions I was asked to convince him (Beng) to join their respective research-intensive institutions.” In addition to his impressive research productivity, Dr. Beng has secured significant funding to support his research initiatives. This funding not only enhances the university's research capabilities but also provides invaluable hands-on research and publishing experiences for students. Dr. Beng’s dedication to integrating research with teaching exemplifies the highest ideals of CWU’s mission. Beyond his individual scholarly accomplishments solving intense research questions in chemistry (such as advanced cancer treatments), his innovative approach to engaging students in meaningful research experiences make him a most deserving recipient of the Distinguished Faculty of Scholarship/Artistic Accomplishment award.
