Central Washington University Board of Trustees May 16, 2025 ACTION – Approval of CWU’s Revised Vision, Mission, Values
During our April 18 meeting, the Vision, Mission, Values Committee shared the feedback we heard from the university community, which indicated a desire to have a more action-oriented focus to our work. At one point in our discussions, Malik Cantú, President of the ASCWU Board of Directors, shared a poignant observation. He stated that the opportunities CWU has provided are what have connected him to the community and made him feel like he belongs. Without those opportunities, he may not have remained a Wildcat. Rather than using familiar terminology, we heard a desire to focus our statements on the underlying actions that make a real difference. For example, the retention project that we implemented, which did not have a specific DEI focus, offered all students opportunities to be more engaged and connected; the results of that project demonstrate that we can improve the success of all students and, at the same time, close achievement gaps for vulnerable populations. As living documents, CWU’s Vision, Mission, Values, and Strategic Plan are designed to evolve to meet the changing needs of our students and society as a whole. Updating these documents is part of the regular process that higher education institutions go through to determine what we have learned and consider how we might evolve our work to meet current challenges.
