Veterans Day Honors the History We Share CELEBRATE IT BY STANDING TOGETHER

November is filled with thoughts of roasting turkeys, pumpkin spice everything, and football games. These are wonderful things to love about this festive time of year, but because Thanksgiving is such a big-ticket holiday, it tends to overshadow another very important holiday this month. Wednesday, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day, and it's a time to honor those who have served in the U.S. military. We pay tribute to the memories of those who have since passed and say thank you to those who are still with us and embody the true spirit of national pride. During a time when our nation is facing one of the most tumultuous periods in its history, national pride is something we should all find a way to come together on. Celebrating Veterans Day gives us a great way to do just that. Here at Malloy Law Offices, LLC, we have a varied team made up of members who each have their own uniquely intricate history. It’s one of the things that makes us such a special team when it comes to supporting each other and serving our clients. Many of us have family members who are U.S. military veterans, and each of our family histories have been directly impacted by those who serve our country.

In our office, Patrick Wilson's grandfather, Robert James Wilson, served in the Army during World War II. Born in Upstate New York in 1924, Robert Wilson was recruited by the Army at just 18 years old. He was deployed to Belgium, and that’s where he met Elsa, a native of the country. After the war, he brought her back to New York and they married, living a long and happy life together. Morgan Kim’s grandfather, Raymond Lamar Mims, was born in 1935 and served in the Navy for 20 years. He was stationed in Japan, where he met his future wife and Morgan’s grandmother. She moved to the U.S. with him and supported him as he fought in the Korean War and Vietnam War. But for decades, Morgan’s family had no idea that he had even participated in the Vietnam War because he refused to speak about the traumas he witnessed for so long. As for me, my uncle, Robert P. Whittier, is a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a Navy pilot with a lieutenant rank who flew torpedo dive bombers, and I’ll never forget the captivating stories he told me when I was younger. I've always held the utmost admiration for the role he served and the bravery he showed as he fought to keep his family and his country safe. These are the stories that make up our wonderful country. Stories of honor, love, bravery, and commitment, but also stories of despair that we can’t speak of until we’re ready. These stories and these people make up the history of our country. They are the very reason it’s so essential to celebrate Veterans Day, even if it’s just by taking a quiet moment to think about those who have served and the sacrifices they made for the life you lead today. If you have served, we thank you for your service. If you are currently serving, we thank you for your bravery. If you are family of someone who has served or is serving, we thank you for your support. When we all stand together, the challenges we face seem a little less daunting. So let's use this Veterans Day as an opportunity to stand together and support one another through the challenges we’re all facing in today’s world.

Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning. Remember to eat your veggies!

Build Hours of Entertainment

With the Perfect Blanket Fort

After months spent stuck at home, it’s no surprise your kids are going stir-crazy. Old toys get stale, new toys are expensive, and there’s only so much backyard-

adventuring they can do as colder weather moves in. So, how can you keep your kids freshly entertained? Build an excellent blanket fort!

CHOOSE THE SPACE WISELY. A smart fort-building space isn’t always what's easy or predictable. Living rooms and bedrooms are go-to spots, but take a look around your different rooms and consider how they might provide better

building opportunities. For example, your dining room table can provide the support you need to build a massive fort. The long hallway leading to the bedrooms means the fort can have tunnels attached to it. You can even build in the attic, where the fort might not have to be temporary. Go for a space that’s fun and unique, even if it means it’s in your way for just a little while. BUILD IT RIGHT. A fort ceiling needs to stay above your kids’ heads where it belongs. They don’t need standing room, but they do need something they can move through freely. Always remember to counterbalance by using lighter sheets on top and heavier blankets on the bottom to weigh everything down. If you add a blanket to one side, add a similar blanket to the opposite side. Also attach blankets to stationary items like doorknobs or furniture legs. If you’re stumped, string up a line of rope to serve as the stable center of your fort. MAKE IT COMFORTABLE. If you take the time to construct a fort that has multiple purposes, your kids are less likely to get bored with it. When they’re all played out, encourage some quiet time in the fort with tablets and laptops for cordless entertainment. String up lights on the ceiling of the fort to provide hands-free light for reading. When it comes to comfort, spare no expense. Couch cushions, pillows, blankets, and sleeping bags are all fair game. You may even get an impromptu nap out of your kids if you do it right.

Zesty Orange Cranberry Sauce

Skip the can-shaped cranberry sauce this year and bring a jar of homemade sauce to Thanksgiving instead. This easy recipe can be made ahead of the big event and keeps for 10 days in the fridge.

Ingredients • 1/2 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed • 1/2 cup water • 3/4 cup plus 2 tbsp sugar

• 12 oz fresh cranberries • 2 tsp orange zest • Salt to taste

Directions 1. In a medium saucepan, heat the orange juice, water, and sugar to a boil. Add other ingredients, then bring mixture back to boiling. 2. Reduce the heat to medium and cook gently for 10–12 minutes, until the cranberries burst. 3. Transfer the sauce to a bowl or jar, cover, and refrigerate until serving.

Forts can be magical places for imagination and hours of entertainment. All it takes is a little creativity and some dedication!

But there’s no denying that throughout our nation’s history, there’s been great and fascinating change too. Just take a look at some of these interesting Thanksgiving historical facts as proof. • The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 over a three-day festival and included 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag, but only had five women present. Turkey wasn’t on the menu either — venison, duck, goose, oysters, lobster, eel, and fish were the main dishes.

• Harry Truman is credited with being the first president to pardon a turkey, but he was actually just the first president to receive a ceremonial turkey from the National Turkey Federation — and he ate it. John F. Kennedy was the first president to let a turkey go. Richard Nixon donated his turkey to a petting zoo, and George H. W. Bush formalized the turkey pardoning tradition in 1989.
