structure. You mentioned going to China. What have you in mind in seeking to help people there to “a higher, nobler life” ? Do you mean to offer them a better civili zation, ideals, way of living, etc.? Dear girl, if you have not the gospel o f the power of Christ to save and transform lives, you have nothing to offer the Chi nese. Last year, I was privileged to spend a few weeks in China, and again and again missionaries and Chinese Christians said, “ Beg the people of your land not to send missionaries out here who are not Bible- believing Christians. Any other kind are only a hindrance; they bring confusion to our people and hinder the power of God from working in our midst.” China does not need our civilization. She has a much older one of her own. For China—and for America and every other land as well—a message of reformation is futile. Only the transforming power of a living Christ can save an individual or a nation. If you go anywhere with any other message, you will come away disillusioned and unsuc cessful. Reading between the lines, I think I detect a restlessness and a hunger in your own heart that must first be satisfied before you can be of any real help to others. Is it not true that you are “all at sea,” not only about knowing God’s place of service for you, but in other respects as well? God says, “Except ye be converted, and become, as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 18:3). The childlike faith in God and His Word which were possibly once yours are your first need today. Real scholarship does not con flict with faith. Some o f the greatest stu dents and thinkers of all times have been simple Bible-believing followers of the Lord. A careful study of the Book that God has given us—its origin, character, and message; its prophecies foretelling history accurately, hundreds of years be fore the events transpire; its revelation of scientific truths which modern man has discovered outside the Bible, only to find that these principles are implied or defi nitely stated in the W ord written centuries ago; its transforming power in human lives, and many other lines o f approach-«^ will prove to any intelligent and open- minded student that the Scriptures are indeed “ God-breathed.” I am glad that it is upon God’s Word and not upon our own opinions, that we are to rest our faith, aren’t you? Belief is a matter of the will. One lime, when I was about your age, and when I could not understand certain things, I had to will to believe (put my trust in) God’s Word. And when I did so, He met my need and revealed Himself to me. He will do the same for you, if you will ask Him, and if you will pay the price. He has promised: “ If from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul” (Deut. 4:29). When you are in the right relation to Him, He can lead you. Indeed He does have a plan and place for you, and you may have the joyful experience of know ing that you are in the center of His will. One great essential for knowing God’s will is to have no will of your own. Desire only His will for you. Do let me know in your next letter that you are making your personal relation to Jesus Christ your first concern. Tell me whether there are obsta cles over which I may help you. After that, we shall be ready to think more about the problem of guidance.

has entered into our hearts. Yes, we have reason for humbling ourselves before God; and if we will abase ourselves, God will bring a revival to this land. G od ’ s R ecovery P rogram as T ested in the P ast “ If my people . . . shall humble them selves, and pray . . . ” This is God’s plan. If we try other plans, we will utterly fail. Man-made plans and organizations, hu man mustering of forces against the mighty onslaught of the enemy—these ef forts will lead to disaster. God’s plan has worked in the past, and it will work in the future. About two hundred years ago, Europe was in very grave circumstances. The revolutionary spirit was running high. England was threatened with revolution and bloodshed. Religion was in a sad de cline, for the people and their leaders were ignorant or indifferent concerning a blood- bought salvation that could bring victory and holiness in daily living. Then a group

AMERICA’S GREATEST NEED [Continued from page 300] of their sin, God heard their prayers and raised up for them a deliverer, and pros perity was restored to them. This Christian nation has forgotten God. Not even one cent out of every hundred is given to the support of God’s w ork! Is it not true that we spend our money on the things that we value the most? But not only in material things have we failed G od; we have sinned in other ways as well. Our affection, which rightly be longs to God, has been shared with the world. The world has so taken hold of our hearts that the Word of God has been neglected in our homes; family worship and the family altar, have been forgotten. And what shall I say of the weekly prayer meetings in our churches ? A las! In many places they are closed, and in other places they are attended only by a very few. We have drifted away from the Bible and from prayer. Spiritual zeal is gone because sin
