of earnest young Christians, of which John Wesley became the leader, appeared on the scene. They met daily for prayer, not only for themselves, but also for the nation—- for the teeming multitudes who were chained in the fetters of sin. They prayed until a mighty spiritual awakening gripped the British Empire. The masses began to see their spiritual needs, and they cried to God for salvation and deliverance from their wicked ways. John Wesley and his fellow workers proclaimed fearlessly that the gospel of Jesus Christ was the power of God unto salvation. They preached the truth and nothing but the truth; they took nothing from it and added nothing to it. They were ridiculed by many and were branded as fanatics, and yet it pleased God to send a mighty revival that saved the na-- tion from a revolution. - This fact has been asserted repeatedly by various historians. In contrast to this outcome, France, not following in the footsteps of England, had a revolution. We may indeed tremble when we think of what may be the result in this country if we reject God’s plan for us. About eighty years ago, our country ex perienced a crisis similar to the one through which we are passing now, but it was then on a smaller scale. Religion—I mean true Christianity—was at a very low state. In Chicago two years ago, a friend showed me a clipping from a magazine describing our present condition. I said, “Yes, that is a very true picture.” Then he turned to me and said, “Notices the date on the page.” The magazine had been published in 1857! Do you know that this country was brought out of its difficulties at*that time through a sweeping religious revival? And

that revival was brought about, through prayer. The spirit of prayer gripped one man in New York City, a man by the name of Lanfear, a city missionary. Soon there were others'-that were burdened for the conditions in the land. Prayer meetings were held all over the city of New York, with interest increasing until large crowds began to flock to these prayer meetings that were held nearly every hour o f the day in churches, theaters, and other public places in the city. The interest spread from New York to other cities until it had com pletely covered the entire country...As a result, this whole nation was shaken by the mighty power of God—stirred beybnd any-' thing that America had experienced before. Lives and hearts were changed; selfishness and greed gave place to unselfishness and love; and skepticism and doubt gave place to positive faith in God and His Word. The church was clothed with spiritual power which influenced the whole nation, raising moral standards and turning the thoughts of men toward the Lord Jesus Christ. A N ation in D esperate N eed : . We have been warned that we can look for “no permanent recovery in this country, no matter what laws are passed, until we experience from coast to' coast a religious revival.” We need a revival like the one that swept the British Empire two hundred years' ago in the days of Wesley, a revival like the one that stirred this country nearly eighty years ago. Then shall the great problem of vice and crime which is threatening the very pillars', of our national structure be truly solved. Selfishness and greed will materially di

minish, and the revolutionary spirit among the masses will be overruled. There will be an understanding between capital and labor, broken homes will be mended, and peace and joy will rule where discontent and strife before sat on the throne. The opinion o f sincere-minded national leaders today is that if we do not witness a revival in this country, we are headed toward national disaster. An editorial in one of the leading papers in the nation says: “About the only thing that can save America from going the way of Babylon is straightening up in morals and stiffening up in ideals.” But there is no possibility of a permanent straightening up in morals and a stiffening up in ideals without the life-giving breath of God through a spirit ual revival that will grip the individual heart and change its course o f living. C an W e H ave a R evival gM God is willing to give; us a revival. He is not only willing but anxious to do it if we are willing to. meet the conditions. The responsibility does not lie with the Presi dent of the United States, It does not lie with pur Congressmen and Senators, nor with our civic leaders, -It lies with us as Christians, God says: " I f my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves,., and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” The sins of professing Christians have brought us into this crisis, into these diffi culties. If God’s people are willing to turn away from their backsliding with their whole heart, God will hear from heaven [Continued on page 325]
