B usiness . 191 pages. Revell Co. Cloth. Price $1.50. • The Shadow of the Broad Brim B y R ichard E llsworth D ay Published in honor of the centenary of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, this fresh, virile biography is a character study of the high est type. Much has been written about Spurgeon, and he himself was a prolific writer whose works are spiritual and liter ary masterpieces. But withal there is real need for the present volume, for it makes a superior contribution to Christian litera ture. Scholarly, yet readable; analytical, yet comprehensive, The Shadow o f the Broad Brim acquaints one with “the prince o f preachers” and with the Puritans, of whom Dr. Day says Spurgeon was the heir. 236 pages. Judson Press. Cloth. Price $1.50. Fairest of All B y H erbert L ockyer In the preface to this collection of ten powerful messages, Dr. Lockyer makes an observation which accounts for the book’s publication: _“The tragedy is that Christ is not the living bright reality to us that He ought to be. We sing, talk, argue about Him, and try to speak to Him, but He is not real to us.” The chapters that follow all center attention in the One who is fairest of all—the One who is supremely real to the author, and the One for whom deep love and devotion are awakened as one reads these pages. Any one o f such chapters as “The Preeminence of Christ,” “ Christ’s Cure for Troubled Hearts,” “Modern Crucifixion of Christ” is alone worth the price of the volume. 157 pages. Cloth. Price $1.00. The Heavenly Octave B y F. W . B oreham Choosing to deal, not with an exposition of the Beatitudes, but with simple and practical lessons drawn from this familiar portion o f Scripture, the author presents eight valuable chapters, bearing such titles as: “The Princely Poor,” “The Olive Branch,” and “The Martyr’s . Crown.” Preacher and layman alike will welcome the freshness of the approach. 115 pages. Abingdon Press. Cloth. Price $1.00. S o much of modern fiction leaves a dis satisfied remembrance o f misspent hours, that friends o f youth welcome a book that weaves in the thread o f Bible precept and provides a story that will appeal to the teen age. Anthea, the eldest daughter of a poor curate in England, is suddenly, through the illness o f her mother, left to assume the care of the family, thereby sac rificing her own desire and ambitions. Her brave acceptance o f her task and the effect of her life upon others permeate the story. This book is easy to read, clean and uplift- ing, and is fine for those in the early adolescent age who are apt to find life in creasingly difficult. 188 pages. Pickering & Inglis. Cloth. Price 60 cents. Anthea’s Ambition B y B eth J. C oombe H arris

When a colorful, dynamic personality is the character to be written about, and when skillful and delicate hands do the writing, the result is bound to be a power ful book. Percy Mather, wiry Scot who braved the perils of Turkestan for Christ’s sake, unquestionably was unusual — his quick mind, sparkling wit, rugged self- discipline, and endurance being hard to match in any other man. And the women who have brought together the story of his beautifully consecrated life are no less, un usual, for they have not only traversed thé dangerous regions that were common to Mr. Mather, thus writing from the depth of experience, but they have already pro duced four other books of exceptional popularity, three of them dealing with ex periences of pioneers. The present volume vividly pictures a country and conditions about which too little has been written; it presents, moreover, a kind o f missionary heroism that is all too infrequently studied. Reading, one feels the touch of God upon the yielded lives o f those who are most prominent in this extraordinary biography. 288 pages. Frederick A. Stokes Co. Cloth. Price $2.00. Ten New Testament texts, each of them' found in the third chapter and sixteenth verse of the book from which they were chosen, were the basis of a series of ser mons, preached in Shreveport, La., where Dr. Dodd has been a pastor for nearly a quarter o f a century. The author is a scholar and a fearless preacher—long rec ognized as one of the great preachers of the South. His sermons are masterly, suggestive, and based squarely upon the Word. For some readers, Dr. Dodd’s repeated commendation of Kagawa may be unappealing. 146 pages. Wm. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. Cloth. Price $1.00. Pastoral Problems B y W. B. R iley Pastors will value this book because of the exceedingly practical character of its contents, and teachers will use it with pro fit as a textbook. Written for use in the Northwestern Evangelical Seminary, Min neapolis, o f which Dr. Riley is the Presi dent, the book has an authoritative ring, for the author is a successful pastor of many years’ experience. There would be fewer cases of maladjustment o f pastor and people if the advice were heeded that this book contains. The substance of one chapter, “Managing Church Troubles,” was published earlier as an article in the K ing ’ s Three: Sixteen« B y ,M. E. D odd
