We breed and develop bulls for the commercial cattleman, blending science and technology with cowboy ethics and values.
Monday, F ebruary 9 , 2026 1:00 pm MST at Lightning Valley Ranch • 5 miles east of Arthur, NE on Hwy 92
Fellow cattlemen and friends, On behalf of myself and my family I would like to invite you to the Ranch February 8 and 9 for the annual Pilakowski Angus bull sale. Join us for chili and cinnamon rolls Sunday the 8th along with bull viewing and again on the 9th for lunch and the sale. I want each of you to know how much we appreciate your continued support, and we thank you for believing in our program. It’s our goal to raise bulls and cows that thrive in all aspects of the cattle business. 2025 was a record year in the cattle industry, I believe that the cow/calf man will continue to be in the driver’s seat moving forward. Low cow numbers and an aging ag sector make this an optimal time to add and reap the benefits of top genetics in your herd.
As always, these bulls have been bred and developed with you, our customers, in mind. They have the eye appeal and structural soundness that you have come to expect. They can be viewed any time prior to the sale at the ranch east of Arthur. I realize we don’t have the most bulls to offer, but I feel like the offering we have can move any program forward. As you invest in the future of your program, I would like to thank you for allowing all of us at Pilakowski Angus to be a part of it. Your support is deeply appreciated. Hope to see you all February 9. Sincerely, Mike Pilakowski
Mike, Melissa, Dane, Colton, and Madelyn Pilakowski
Sam would say “These guys are packed with muscle and the fact is these bulls are DARN good.” Hope to see you all February 9.

*All EPDs as of January 4, 2026 Scrotal circumference will be available at www.pilakowskiangus.com and at the sale.
Pilakowski Angus Bull Development Program Calves are weighed at birth and recorded. Calves are branded and given their first round of vaccines in early April. Pairs are sent to summer range in mid-May. Calves are given NO CREEP FEED. Calves are weaned in early August. Weights are taken to calculate 205 Day Weights. Two more rounds of vaccines are given. In November bulls are freeze-branded with their permanent I.D. DNA samples are pulled and submitted to AngusGS, and verification of parentage. All bulls whose parentage suggests that he may be a potential carrier of any known defect are tested. Bulls who are carriers of lethal defects (NH, CA, AM) are eliminated from the sale. DD carriers are designated as such on their pedigrees. In mid-Jan the bulls were given two rounds of foot rot vaccine, scrotal measured and examined, however we do recommend a full semen evaluation prior to spring turn out. Yearling weights are taken in late January. Bulls are ultrasounded to measure fat, IMF, and ribeye.

Genomic Testing and Genomic Enhanced EPDs All of the bulls in the sale display a symbol for AngusGS on the pedigree. Those animals’ EPDs are GE-EPDs, meaning they have had a genomic test performed on a DNA sample from that animal which provides additional information used in calculation of their EPDs.
*It is important to note that genomics do not completely describe the variation in the traits of interest. Phenotypic measures collected by Angus breeders, such as birth, weaning, and yearling weights, ultrasound scan data, carcass data, etc., continue to be an important part in further development of improved genomic panels, not to mention an important component in EPD calculation. How are Genomic Test Results Reported? The results of genomic testing are provided in percentile rankings, based on a reference population of more than 15,000 tested Angus animals. Ranks range from 1 to 100 with lower numbers generally favored for most traits. Some traits for which percent ranks are available, are not yet included in GE-EPDs powered by AngusGS. These include ranks for heifer pregnancy, measures of feed efficiency and end-product tenderness, which are relevant to Angus breeders as well as their bull customers, cattle feeders, and consumers. When making selection decisions for traits that have EPDs provided by the AAA, the EPDs should be the selection tool of choice. The EPDs account for all sources of information available on the animal – pedigree, own record, weights/ measures, and genomic results.
American Angus Association Genomic Enhanced EPDs Genomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait, such as carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in genomic technology, this means that in addition to the pedigree, performance and progeny information that are used in the calculation and reporting of Angus EPDs, genomic test results have also been incorporated into the EPD. Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs) are important because they make use of the results from the DNA test in addition to all other sources of information to provide added accuracy and reliability to the animal’s EPD. In fact, depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8-20 calves.

What are EPDs?
An Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is a prediction of how future progeny of a sire or dam are expected to perform in various production and carcass traits which are measurable. EPDs are expressed in actual pounds, square inches, or centimeters, (depending on the trait), plus or minus what you can expect in the weights or measurements of progeny sired by a particular animal as compared with another animal. The EPDs of the animals listed in this sale book can be compared to other animals of the same breed. The EPDs listed are current as of December 23, 2019. Updated EPDs can be viewed at www.angus.org. Average EPDs Angus (Non-Parent Bulls) CED +6, BW +1.2, WW +68, YW +120, SC +0.89, Milk +27, Marb +0.78, RE +0.71 The EPD information was derived from the 2016 Fall National Sire Evaluation conducted by the American Angus Association. Please ask if you need assistance in understanding how to use the EPDs. Calving Ease Direct (CED) – is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD – gives an indication of calving- ease. Birth Weight EPD predicts the birth weight difference one can expect from any two sires. When bred to genetically similar groups of cows, a bull with a Birth EPD of +5.0 should sire calves with an average birth weight 2 pounds heavier than a bull with a Birth Weight EPD of +3.0. *Experience has shown that an Angus bull with a CED EPD of +6 or higher and a BW EPD of +2.5 or less can be used on first calf heifers with a minimal number of calving problems. If you do not have heifers to breed and need a bull for cows that have calved before, any Angus bull in our offering should be acceptable from a calving-ease standpoint. Weaning Weight EPD – is a prediction of a bull’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. For example, Bull A has a Weaning Weight EPD of +60 pounds and Bull B has a Weaning Weight EPD of +40 pounds. At weaning, Bull A’s calves will average 20 pounds heavier.
Yearling EPD – Yearling Weight EPD takes into account both pre-weaning and post weaning growth. Yearling weight is the most heritable of all growth traits. You can expect bulls with high yearling EPDs to produce fast gaining calves. If Bull A has a Yearling Weight EPD of +90 and Bull B has a Yearling Weight EPD of +60, Bull A’s calves will average 30 pounds heavier than Bull B’s at one year of age. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) – expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Milk EPD – expressed in pounds of weaning weight that result from the amount of milk produced by daughters of a particular bull, as compared to the daughters of other bulls. If Bull A is +25 for Milk and Bull B is +15, bull A’s daughters’ calves will weigh 10 pounds heavier at weaning due to her superior milking ability. Carcass EPDs Marbling EPD (Marb) – expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. The higher the value, the higher the amount of intramuscular fat (taste fat) in the ribeye, which positively affects quality grade. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) – expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$M - Maternal Weaned Calf Value $M is the most maternally-focused selection index currently available. $M, expressed in dollars per head, aims to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. $M places greater emphasis on the cost side of commercial cow-calf production than any tool available in the past. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Under $M selection, less emphasis is placed on maternal milk, while heifer pregnancy and docility have an increased emphasis, and foot traits start to improve. The index finds cattle that are most profitable when producers receive no economic benefit for traits affecting post-weaning performance.

Value of bull to commercial herd exceeds ‘relative’ value By Paul Schattenberg, Texas AgriLife Extension
The value of bulls in commercial herds goes beyond the “relative” value typically ascribed to them in market pricing, said a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. Joe Paschal, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, said a good bull is likely the “best investment” a cattle producer can make. “In publications referencing cattle values for commercial producers, as well as reports from beef breed associations, the value of a bull is often given as equivalent to the average value of five weaned calves,” said Paschal. “This has been a long-held comparison for determining the value of a bull, but it really doesn’t take into account all aspects of what bulls provide to the herd.” Paschal said the value of one bull to five weaned calves resulted from a relative equivalency identified as market prices fluctuated over the past several years. “At least up until around 2010, producers paid less than 50% of the value of those five calves on a bull,” Paschal explained. “Then from 2011 until 2015 producers began to pay more, including up to 100% of the value of five calves in 2013. Then, in 2015, producers paid up to 150% of the value of five calves for one bull. When calf prices dropped in 2016, the ratio dropped back to about 115% — between $5,000 and $5,250 — closer to the average value of the five calves.”
However, this ratio doesn’t fully reflect the additional value bulls supply to the herd, Paschal said. “Bulls supply the genetics for the next generation of replacement females in most commercial herds, except those strictly using terminal crossing,” he said. “It should be remembered that bulls are more than just ‘cow fresheners’ as my former colleague, Dr. Rick Machen, retired AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in Uvalde, was fond of saying. As such, their value goes beyond the market price for five head of calves.” Paschal said if a bull is used for three years and the producer does not introduce any outside female replacements into the herd, that bull would then be responsible for up to 87% of the cow herd’s genes. “A lot of products and equipment are touted as being the best investment a cattle producer can make, but a good bull is the only thing that can really match that description,” he said. “If you maintain a closed herd, the genes entering the cow herd will come completely from the bulls you select, and that’s a huge contribution — for better or worse — to the herd’s overall genetic makeup. When you look at it from that perspective, you see just how valuable a good bull is to a commercial cow herd.”

The Chiefton son has worked his way to the top! I had an opportunity to buy a flush from friend and fellow Angus breeder, Bo Solvek in 2024. This flush is lights out from top to bottom. The numbers aren’t flashy but this bull is slick haired and big footed with top maternal EPDs. Flush brothers sell as lots 5, 20, 21 and 22. Recommended for Heifers.
