CONFERENCES & CLASSES DODD SHORT COURSE

The Dodd Short Courses took place in Gainesville, Florida. This year, nine employees participated in the classes offered by Dodd. The curriculum offers a diverse array of courses centered on mosquito control and aquatic management, including the annual Sentinel Chicken Disease Surveillance course taught by Biological Specialist, Beth Kovach.

FMCA ANNUAL CONFERENCE Several members of the MAWC team attended the annual conference of the Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA) held in Orlando. Over the course of three days, the presentations encompassed a wide range of topics, including scientific research, emerging technologies, operational strategies, and updates from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). The evening social events provided excellent networking opportunities with colleagues from across the state and the nation.

FMCA ANNUAL FLY-IN

Employees from MAWC, along with pilots and mechanics from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), attended the FMCA’s annual Aerial Fly-In at Buckingham Field, hosted by the Lee County Mosquito Control District. This workshop offered Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in Aerial Applicator and Public Health, along with insights into technology, aviation safety, and aerial treatment practices. Highlights included hands-on demonstrations of aircraft calibration techniques and a granular characterization demo using storage totes for material capture during flyovers. Participants also viewed various aircraft from agencies like Hillsborough, Collier, and Polk, with a special mention of Lee County's "Autopilot" from the film Airplane !
