OUTREACH

EAST ELEMENTARY

The biology team— Beth Kovach, Sydney L’Heureux, and Tammy Flores— had the privilege of sharing insights into the role of a mosquito biologist during Career Day at East Elementary School. The team engaged with every fourth- and fifth-grade class, discussing the work and its significance, with a particular emphasis on the importance of science. The presentation aimed to inspire students who may be considering a career in a science-related field.

Staff successfully managed the Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA) booth located within the Insect Encounters building at the Florida State Fair. The booth showcased an extensive array of educational materials on mosquito control, with various agencies from across the state volunteering to assist throughout the day. During the event, the team engaged with 469 visitors who were eager to learn about mosquito control methods. Overall, the team received positive feedback from attendees, who recognized the importance of mosquito control and its vital role in promoting public health. FLORIDA STATE FAIR

MYAKKA RIVER

The outreach team had the pleasure of educating more than 230 participants at Myakka River Elementary School’s annual STEM Night about mosquito control. The event highlighted the science behind mosquitoes, covering topics such as their life cycle, species found in Charlotte County, surveillance techniques, breeding sites, and larval management. Digital microscopes, which displayed both larval and adult mosquitoes, along with a house breeding model, were major attractions during the event. These outreach initiatives encourage families to take proactive measures against mosquitoes by identifying and eliminating standing water around their homes, while also fostering a positive relationship between mosquito control efforts and the community.
