It Started With One Person in Need

It was a cold winter in Utah when the phone rang. A young man was struggling — years into his battle with addiction, he had run out of options and out of hope. He didn’t need judgment or another lecture. He needed someone willing to open the door.

Chris and Matt Farni — a father and son who knew recovery firsthand, didn’t think twice about helping this man. Chris had been a direct witness to his son Matt’s struggle with addiction from middle school through his late twenties, experiencing what would become their greatest training in understanding addiction and recovery. When Matt found his path to sobriety, now over 8 years strong, they realized their shared purpose. Together, they cleared out the spare bedroom of their small apartment, put fresh sheets on the bed, and welcomed him in. The first days weren’t easy. There were long silences, shared meals, cautious laughter, and moments when no one knew what tomorrow would bring. But little by little, trust grew. That young man’s eyes brightened, his shoulders lifted, and for the first time in a long time, hope started to return.

That experience changed all three of them. For Chris and Matt, it wasn’t the start of a business. It was the start of a calling — to help people heal not in rows of hospital beds, but in spaces that felt safe, personal, and human. They believed recovery could happen best in a place that felt like home, surrounded by mountains, fresh air, and real connection. From that one spare bedroom grew the vision for Spirit Mountain Recovery. And while the house is bigger today, the heart of it hasn’t changed. We’re still small. We’re still family-run. And we still believe that every single story matters.

One Man’s Recovery Became Hope for Many

“I had no idea what I was doing,” our founder often says about starting Spirit Mountain Recovery. “I didn’t come from a treatment background. I had never been to rehab. I had no experience running a program at all.” What he did have was his own story. Over a decade ago, Matt was in the depths of addiction. Drugs and alcohol had stripped away everything from him. By every measure, he should not be alive today. But he survived. “Through what I can only call a miracle, I found recovery, and I’ve been sober ever since.” That miracle changed the course of his life. Matt and his father, Chris, wanted to create a space where other men could find that same transformation. They began with almost nothing—just a small three- bedroom apartment, a few beds, and the belief that healing is possible for anybody. From the very beginning, it was not about creating a business. It was about creating a home. A place where men would be treated with dignity, seen as individuals, and surrounded by support. “It wasn’t fancy,” Matt remembers, “but it was real. And it was enough to change lives.”

Matt, Founder

Over the years, that vision grew into what Spirit Mountain Recovery is today: a family-run program in Eden, Utah, surrounded by the very mountains that symbolize strength and renewal. The heart of it has never changed. “From day one, our focus wasn’t on building the biggest program. It was on giving men personal care, connection, and hope—the things that truly make recovery stick.” Spirit Mountain was born from a father’s love, a son’s redemption, and the shared belief that recovery is not just about getting sober. It is about rebuilding your entire life. Today, what started as a single apartment has become a thriving program, helping men heal one life at a time.

It Matters

Who’s in the Room With You

Recovery thrives in relationships. Spirit Mountain’s small-group approach gives you the chance to build real, lasting connections with peers and staff who remain part of your support system long after your time here.

Here’s what staying small means for you:

You’ll get genuine one-on-one time with staff.

You’ll build real friendships with peers who truly understand.

You’ll never feel lost in the crowd.

We’re not aiming to be the biggest program. We’re aiming for the best care possible for each person that walks in through the door.

Recovery Built Around You

No two journeys into recovery look the same. Some men arrive ready to change; others are only beginning to believe it’s possible. Wherever someone is starting from, we begin by listening and then we create a plan that makes sense for their unique story.

Here’s what that looks like at Spirit Mountain Recovery:

Individualized Plans That Evolve: We build a schedule around your needs, not just on day one but continuously as you progress. If something is not working, we change it. Staff to Client Ratio You Will Not Find Elsewhere: With only eight beds and a 2:1 staff to client ratio, you get more direct interaction and more personal accountability than larger facilities can offer. Integrated Clinical and Experiential Work: Traditional therapy is paired with outdoor activities, recreation, and life skills practice so lessons are not just talked about, they are lived. Family Embedded Into Treatment: Parents, partners, and loved ones are invited into the process from the start, not as an afterthought. Healing does not happen in isolation.

Life After Spirit Mountain: Every client leaves with practical skills including budgeting, cooking, career planning, and relationship repair so sobriety translates into a sustainable life.

Programs Designed For Recovery Residential Treatment Our Residential Program provides the highest level of structure, care, and community support. With only 8 beds, we keep our community small so every man is truly known and supported. This intimate setting, combined with a 1 staff member for every 2 clients ratio, ensures that care is personal, consistent, and attentive at every step. Clients live on site with us, surrounded by staff and peers who understand the recovery journey and are committed to walking it together. Days include individual therapy, group sessions, outdoor activities, and opportunities to practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment.

We focus on healing the whole person — addressing substance use as well as the emotional, mental, and spiritual struggles that often accompany it. For families, Residential care brings peace of mind knowing your loved one is in a safe, structured environment with round-the-clock support and an unmatched level of personal attention. It is often the first major step in recovery, offering a foundation of stability where clients can begin to heal, grow, and prepare for the next stage of their journey.

Healing Isn’t a Solo Journey

When addiction strikes, it wounds the whole family. We involve families from day one as active participants, not just visitors. They’re learning, healing, and rebuilding trust right alongside their loved one. Here’s how we make that real: Weekly Virtual Family Coaching: Loved ones participate in guided, structured sessions no matter where they live. Family Education and Psychoeducation: We teach what addiction really is, how it changes brain chemistry, and how families can respond in ways that support—not enable—positive change. Joint Therapy Opportunities: When safe and appropriate, family members can join therapy sessions to rebuild trust, improve communication, and face past hurts. Ongoing Support After Graduation: Healing doesn’t stop when the client leaves. Families have access to resources, coaching, and check-ins after discharge to keep momentum going. 2-Day Family Intensive: Our 2-day Family Intensive is designed to support meaningful change by addressing the family system as a whole. Through a combination of group therapy, individual family sessions, educational components, and experiential work, families gain deeper understanding, improved communication, and practical tools for ongoing growth. This immersive experience helps each member explore their role within the family dynamic and strengthen connection—creating a more balanced and supportive home environment.

When families heal together, recovery lasts longer.

Healing Happens in More Places Than a Therapy Room At Spirit Mountain Recovery, we don’t keep you stuck inside all day. You’ll have your therapy sessions and group meetings, but we know some of the biggest shifts happen when you’re actually doing something with your hands or moving your body.

Morning Each day begins with breakfast in our kitchen

overlooking the mountains — a quiet moment before the energy of the day starts. Clients gather in our main room, intentionally designed for comfort rather than a clinical feel, where real conversations naturally happen. From there, we get everyone moving. Morning movement is part of our culture: pickleball games, climbing sessions, trips to the CrossFit gym, and other activities that help clients wake up their bodies, boost motivation, and start the day with momentum.

Midday Sometimes a therapy session means heading to the lake with fishing poles. People learn to fish and practice other mindful activities, but they’re also learning to sit still without phones buzzing. The conversations that happen while waiting for a bite? Those are often the ones that matter most.

PAGE 12

Afternoon The afternoon could mean heading out on a local hiking trail. Nothing too challenging, just time outdoors and moving. Conversations develop naturally about people’s stories and worries about the future. At the overlook, everyone realizes meaningful dialogue happened without any pressure.

Evening Evening means returning to the house to prepare and share dinner as a group. Staff join clients at the table, fostering genuine connection. These shared meals create the kind of normalcy that becomes part of healing.

Why We Do It This Way These experiences aren’t just activities to fill time. Fishing, hiking, and cooking together help people practice living differently. Recovery means more than stopping destructive behaviors - it’s about building new ways to connect and find meaning in everyday moments.
