If you’re a regular reader of my newsletter, you know I usually use this section to share news from my personal life or discuss things that are important or relevant to me. This edition, I’d love to do something different! Dr. Schuyler Tang recently joined our practice, and I’m going to pass this section to him to introduce himself and share a little about his life. He’ll likely start contributing regularly to our newsletter, so make sure you read through future editions to learn more about his passion for orthodontics, the joy he finds in hobbies, and more.

Dentistry. This proved to be one of the most rewarding decisions of my life. Not only did I discover a real passion for teeth after experiencing the combination of working with my hands and the planning related to the physics and logistics of tooth movement, but I also met my wife while in dental school. She was an undergrad at UC Davis at the time, and we quickly bonded over our shared love of playing the cello. Upon finishing dental school, my wife and I relocated to my home state of Florida, where I earned my orthodontics certificate from the University of Florida and became certified

Without further ado, take it away, Dr. Tang!

I am so excited to join Alborzi Orthodontics and help our patients achieve the smile of their dreams! When you speak with dentists, orthodontists, or anyone else in the dental field, many will tell you that they wanted to explore this career from an early age. They may have been fascinated by dental appointments from their youth or just really liked taking care of their smile. My story is a little different, however. My path was shaped by seeing and talking with people who didn’t enjoy their careers. I had many family members who worked in medicine, but none of them were particularly happy in their role. That said, I really enjoyed biology and knew I wanted to do something science-related. I started to explore the idea of flavor chemistry for a bit, but I quickly realized it was a long route that took just as long as earning a doctorate. After talking with a few flavor chemists who were regretful in their career choice, I took a leap of faith and fully invested myself in the dental world. After deciding to investigate a dental career further and earning my Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Vanderbilt University, I attended the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of

by the American Board of Orthodontics. I practiced in Florida for a few years after finishing my residency before my wife and I decided that we preferred California. We moved to the Half Moon Bay area, where I met Dr. Alborzi and joined her team. It’s been a great fit and experience since day one! While practicing orthodontics remains my greatest passion, I also maintain some exciting hobbies away from the office. I greatly enjoy sailing and archery, and have been spending my weekends at Spinnaker Sailing. I still enjoy playing the cello and have even started looking into joining a local community orchestra. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear about them during your next appointment! I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your dream smile. If you ever have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to bring them up!

Stop Receding Gums Before They Start SIMPLE HABITS THAT CAN SAVE YOUR SMILE

When most people think about oral health, they focus solely on their teeth. That’s what other people see when we flash our smiles, so it makes sense that we want them to be as white, straight, and healthy as possible. However, you also need to pay attention to and care for your gums. Once they start receding, there are very few options to correct them. January is Receding Gums Awareness Month, so there’s no better time to learn more about a condition that affects a significant portion of the American population.

As mentioned earlier, once your gums start to recede, it is nearly impossible to get them to return to their original position. There is no cure, and nonsurgical treatments like antibiotics and dental bonding will only go so far. While orthodontics may help if a chipped or rotated tooth is causing the recession, there’s no telling for sure if the gum line will correct itself after treatment. Gum graft surgery performed by a periodontist is the only long-lasting treatment option with proven results. In most cases, they’ll take a graft from the roof of your mouth and transplant it to your gum line. When it comes to gum recession, prevention is the best option since it can’t truly be cured. Some things you can do to stave off gum recession include brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, visiting your dentist for your cleanings and checkups, avoiding smoking or chewing tobacco, and using a soft-bristle toothbrush.

Gum recession is a form of gum disease that occurs when your tissue pulls away from your teeth, exposing

your sensitive roots and making your teeth more susceptible to cavities. It can happen for many different reasons, including brushing too hard or aggressively, dental plaque buildup, injury to gum tissue, smoking, mouth piercings, and periodontal disease. If you start to notice pain or discomfort near your gum line or sensitivity, you should bring it up at your next dental appointment.

As soon as you notice any symptoms or signs of gum recession, see your dentist immediately. You don’t want it to get any worse!
