SCENARIO PLANNING IN BUSINESS By Hakan Ozel Vice President Operations & General Manager, Shangri-La Dubai
I ntroduction If one of your leadership strengths is “futuristic”, Business Scenario Planning should be the most enjoyable and motivating model in your business life. Scenario planning is a strategic method that helps businesses prepare for future uncertainties by envisioning multiple potential scenarios. This approach allows companies to anticipate risks, seize opportunities, and develop flexible strategies to navigate changing market dynamics. By asking "What if?" organizations can minimize risks and enhance long-term resilience. Understanding Scenario Planning
Article from Global Trend Monitor magazine, February issue
Scenario planning involves creating detailed story lines that describe different future states based on key variables and trends, many of which might be beyond our control. Unlike traditional forecasting, scenario planning considers multiple possibilities, helping businesses remain adaptable in uncertain environments. It involves identifying key variables that could impact the business, such as economic shifts, regulatory changes, social trends, and competitive disruptions. Key Elements of Scenario Planning The main components of scenario planning include: Driving forces – External factors such as political, economic, social, and technological influences. Critical uncertainties – Unpredictable factors that can significantly impact the business. Scenarios – Possible future narratives based on different combinations of driving forces and uncertainties. Implications – The potential impact of each scenario on business operations and strategy. Strategic options – Flexible strategies that ensure adaptability and resilience. Benefits of Scenario Planning Enhanced strategic awareness – Companies gain insights into industry trends and external influences. Improved risk management – Identifying potential risks reduces the chance of being caught off guard. Increased agility – Flexible strategies allow businesses to adapt quickly to change. Better decision-making – Scenario planning fosters long-term thinking and resilience. Stronger alignment – Engaging stakeholders fosters collaboration and trust.

SCENARIO PLANNING IN BUSINESS
By Hakan Ozel Vice President Operations & General Manager, Shangri-La Dubai
The Process of Scenario Planning 1. Define Scope and Objectives
The first step is to clarify the purpose of scenario planning and set the timeframe. For example, a company may assess how economic downturns might affect its operations over the next few years. For example, a company may want to explore the potential impact of a business disruption due to economic challenges of a destination over the next couple of years. 2. Identify Driving Forces and Critical Uncertainties Businesses must identify key factors shaping their industry through industry reports, expert insights, and trend analysis to create meaningful scenarios. The objective is to pinpoint the most critical and influential factors and understand how they might offer to create different future scenarios. 3. Develop Scenarios Based on the identified factors, organizations create distinct "What if" scenarios representing different future possibilities. Each scenario should be a rational and compelling narrative that describes a possible future state. 4. Analyze Implications Each scenario’s impact on the company’s operations, financials, and strategy is assessed to identify risks and opportunities by how each scenario might impact the company's operations, competitive position, and strategic goals including financials. By doing so, businesses can identify potential risks and opportunities associated with each scenario. 5. Develop Strategic Options Flexible strategies are created to help businesses pivot as needed in response to emerging challenges. The goal is to create a strong strategy that can resist various future conditions. 6. Monitor and Update Scenario planning is an ongoing process requiring regular updates to remain relevant as new trends emerge so that the company remains agile and responsive to evolving uncertainties. Conclusion Scenario planning is a vital tool for businesses to navigate uncertainty and stay competitive. By developing adaptable strategies based on multiple possible futures, organizations can enhance resilience, seize opportunities, and thrive in an unpredictable business landscape. Embracing scenario planning as a core component of strategic management enables companies to stay ahead of the business and capture opportunities in an unpredictable environment.

Shangri-La Dubai hosts special Iftar for Embrace partner during the Holy Month of Ramadan
SOCIAL ESG
Shangri-La Dubai has been a proud partner of the Emirates Down Syndrome Association (EDSA) for the past 16 years, as part of our Embrace initiative. In line with this commitment, we had the privilege of hosting a special Iftar during this holy month of Ramadan for individuals with Down Syndrome and their families. The event was a heartfelt gathering where members of our management team personally welcomed the attendees, ensuring they felt valued and celebrated. Our team also joined them for the Iftar, sharing meaningful conversations and moments of togetherness, embodying the spirit of Ramadan—compassion, unity, and generosity. Our dedication to EDSA was further reaffirmed earlier this year through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement strengthens our long-term collaboration, paving the way for ongoing initiatives that support individuals with Down Syndrome and contribute to their well-being.
