THE IMPORTANCE OF GRATITUDE

T he holiday season is a great time to recharge and appreciate the good things in life. Whether it’s a small gesture from a neighbor or something bigger, such as your family or your health, our lives are filled with people and moments to be grateful for. In my own life, there are many things I am grateful for. I feel blessed to have my health and to be able to wake up each day and live in a free country. It’s a place where a minority woman can have an amazing career, work with an amazing team, and be able to help others achieve their own dreams. I’m grateful for all the people in my life. There are so many people who have not only been supportive, but have also played a big role in shaping who I am today. I have my husband, who is always there to support me in all the things I do. I have my family and friends. I have my team. I am a young, ambitious immigration attorney. There is no way I could do it alone. My team helps me fulfill my own purpose and assists those who come to us for help. They are an incredible group of people, and I am thankful for them each and every day. I am also grateful for our clients. These are the folks who come to our law firm and put their trust in what we do. They come to us for help and allow us to be there for them. We hear so many stories of hardship and struggle. Immigration can often be an uphill battle, and it takes a lot of courage to go after your dream — or to even seek out the resources you need to take that next step.

This month, whether you’re gathered for Thanksgiving, Sunday dinner, or just a small family meal, I encourage you to take a moment to look around the room at the people you care about most. Or call them. Or send them a letter. Share your gratitude and appreciation with them. Expressing gratitude is not only a wonderful feeling — it also makes everyone else feel cherished. These days, it’s easy for life and work to become distractions. So many of us lead busy lives and can lose sight of what truly matters. What’s important, however, is recognizing when it happens so you can pause and reflect. When you give thanks and share your appreciation of others, it strengthens your bond with those people. It’s part of the love that keeps family and friends close. What makes Thanksgiving and the holidays special is that it’s typically one of the few times a year when many families gather. You may see people you haven’t seen in months, if not longer. That’s why giving thanks and expressing gratitude is so important during this time of year. Of course, giving thanks and simply being thankful on every other day of the year is just as important. When you’re healthy, give thanks. When your family is healthy, give thanks. When you’re in love, give thanks. Recognize the good in every moment and in each person you love.
