[125] The Sound Factory: Music Making for All Ages From ribbon sticks, to shakers, maracas and other simple sound making creations, students will discover how these sound makers work, and then work together to make instruments and create music. [126] 14 Billion Years of Nuclei Learn how the elements have been formed over the entire history of the universe, what we still don’t know and how MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams will help reveal the origins of heavy nuclei. [127] Biomass to Biofuel Biofuel is produced from plants as well as microbes and in this class, we’ll discuss converting biomass to bioenergy, learn how to make biofuel from soybeans and have a debate on food vs. fuel. [128] Hands-on Chemistry Work with real scientists to understand how the world works. Be prepared to get a little messy as we experiment with chromatography, superabsorbent polymers, balloons that do not pop and more. [129] Microscope Guessing Game Have you wondered how everyday objects look really, really close up, how Velcro works, why wool sweaters are so itchy, or why some leaves feel fuzzy? In this class, we’ll seek to answer these questions as you try to identify objects in a Scanning Electron Microscope at high magnification. [130] Physics is Fun Witness interesting and exciting physics demonstrations as you learn about the most important physical laws governing our world.
[131] All About Black Education Explore the contributions Black people have made to public education in the United States, including something new about the Brown v Board of Education Supreme Court desegregation decision and its relevance for schools today. [132] Introduction to Debate Learn debate techniques and interact in a mock debate with the nationally successful MSU Debate Team. Students will debate on fun topics, like whether a hotdog is a sandwich and relevant topics such as should the United States reduce its nuclear arsenal. [133] The History of Soap Dive into the origins and history of soap and provides a demonstration on how to make it. Students will work in groups to make their own batch of soap that they can take home. [134] Animal Tracks and Scat Explore the wild animals that you may see in Michigan by looking at their tracks and make some edible scat. [135] Name That Animal Learn about some of the world’s most unique species in a group guessing game based on clues surrounding its environment, life cycle, adaptations etc., followed by a brief discussion of each animal. NOTE: This is a new version for 2024.
