Whether it’s a cocktail hour or a wedding ceremony, Common House’s courtyard event space is the perfect setting for a luxurious outdoor event in New Orleans. For this wedding ceremony, Stem Studio created a lush, asymmetric floral arch in reds, oranges and blues inspired by the invitation suite. Smaller arrangements line the aisle drawing the eye to the center focal point. On each guest chair (from Common House’s in-house inventory), were placed brilliant orange folding paper fans that serve not only decorative, but practical purposes! For the ceremony, Hannah is wearing “Callie” from Bliss Bridal , a strapless, tulle A-line gown with a tiered boho-style skirt. Completing her look is a multicolor, cathedral length floral veil, also from Bliss Bridal , and she carries a colorful, hand-tied bouquet by Stem Studio . Jakob wears “Dominic” a tan, slim fit suit with a bow tie in the light peach color “Bellini” from John’s Tuxedos and Suits .

Rauch agrees. “It’s important to provide wedding ceremonies that honor cultural traditions and allow all guests to fully experience the couple’s special day,” she says. THE GROWING POPULARITY OF BILINGUAL WEDDINGS The demand for bilingual officiants has grown significantly in recent years. More couples are choosing to honor their heritage while making sure that their families and friends can fully engage in the ceremony. “Some couples want everything in both Spanish and English,” says Ruddock. “Other couples just want to highlight certain parts of the ceremony in both languages. We will tailor and personalize it as as much as a couple wants.” CUSTOMIZING THE CEREMONY Every bilingual wedding is different, and both Ruddock and Rauch take time to understand each couple’s cultural traditions and preferences. Hispanic weddings are filled with special rituals Ruddock notes, like the lazo ceremony, where a cord or rosary is placed around the couple’s shoulders as a symbol of unity, or the arras tradition, where 13 coins are exchanged as a representation of financial support and blessings. In addition to these traditions, Rauch notes that many couples incorporate live music, such as mariachi bands or traditional dancers, and serve culturally significant dishes. “It makes for an exceptional wedding experience for everyone,” she says.
Rauch coincide.

MAKING GUESTS FEEL INCLUDED A bilingual wedding is not just about translating words— it’s about creating an inclusive and engaging experience for all attendees. Ruddock works closely with couples to strike a balance so that all guests, regardless of language, can follow along and feel connected. “I would tell the bride and groom to individually speak with their families about what is important to their family traditions and marriage,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity to communicate with your family and then share those special traditions with your finance and officiant so we can blend up a unique and special day.” Additionally, New Orleans is a major destination wedding location, Rauch mentions, and guests often travel from afar. It’s important to make sure they feel comfortable and included in the celebration. From selecting bilingual- friendly venues like Canal Street Inn - one of Rauch’s favorites - to curating a ceremony that incorporates both languages naturally, every detail contributes to a stress- free and enjoyable experience. FINAL THOUGHTS For Ruddock, the most rewarding part of officiating bilingual weddings is working with multicultural families and crafting ceremonies that reflect both partners’ heritage. A wedding is about unity—not just between the couple, but between families and traditions. A bilingual ceremony celebrates that unity in the most meaningful way. For couples planning a bilingual wedding, embracing both languages and cultures will ensure a memorable and heartfelt celebration for all. Whether through readings, vows, rituals, or music, bilingual weddings create a bridge between two worlds, bringing families together in a beautiful and lasting way.

Big Love Big Easy in the
College sweethearts Amelie Gelpi and Chuck Lyles celebrated their wedding in true New Orleans fashion, with cathedral vows, a second line, and a House of Blues reception full of music, memories, and meaning.
DECEMBER 14, 2024 | NEW ORLEANS, LA PHOTOGRAPHY BY: CREEL & CO.
A melie, a born and raised New Orleans girl, recalls meeting Chuck, whom she affectionately describes as a “southern gem” from Thibodaux, LA—during their college years. The two spent their 20s growing together, sharing a deep bond over their mutual love of music and life. “The proposal was amazing,” says Amelie…”everything I wanted!” In June of 2023, under the guise of grabbing a drink before “meeting our friends to watch the LSU baseball game,” Chuck brought Amelie to the New Orleans hot spot, Hot Tin, known for its magnificent view of the city. “We got a table outside and hung out for a minute until he popped the question!” shares Amelie. “Little did I know he’d hired a photographer to capture the moment. We took some pictures and then went back to my mom’s house where all of our friends met us for a fun little party at home.” The wedding weekend events began with a rehearsal dinner at Broussard’s Restaurant in the French Quarter. Amelie wore a very special gown the night of the rehearsal -
her mother-in-law’s 1989 Princess Diana-inspired wedding dress, which she had altered into a mini dress for the occasion. “I’ve always loved when I saw girls do this with their moms’ dresses,” says Amelie. “It makes the love story transcend time and adds such a unique and vintage feel to the whole weekend.” With her own mother’s dress unable to be altered, she turned to her mother-in-law. “My mother in law…is a mom of 3 boys who had no intention of ever opening her dress box again. She had a beautiful marriage to Chuck’s dad who passed away in 2018. When she showed me her dress she apologized for its extravagance and told me not to judge it. ‘Princess Diana was really big at the time,’ she confessed without realizing that was the exact style I had dreamed of wearing. Ms. Jane was elated to share her dress with me and I loved getting to feel like I had the chance to honor their marriage on the night she planned for us.” The wedding day began with the bridal party getting ready at Hotel Monteleone. heading to the church to say their vows. “For me, at that point of the day I was just so excited to finally get to see each other,” Amelie shares. “Everything had felt so busy and every moment felt fleeting. When we finally got to see each other, it felt like time slowed down and I was reminded of the true magic and beauty of the wedding day.” For Chuck, this moment was the first time the seriousness of the day really hit him. “He was taken back by how beautiful I looked and was left completely speechless!” says Amelie. The Saint Louis Cathedral was what Amelie calls “the obvious choice” for their wedding ceremony. “We both grew up Catholic and always knew we wanted to get married in a
big New Orleans church that would accommodate both of our large families and all of our friends. The Cathedral kind of felt like a “go big or go home” scenario that was too good to pass up.” “After such a grandiose formal ceremony, we knew we wanted the reception to just feel FUN,” says Amelie. “It also needed to be close enough to the church that we could Second Line there. House of Blues checked every box!” For the Second Line, Amelie and Chuck had a Kinfolk Brass Band to lead the celebration and “a cart full of drinks waiting for our guests after the ceremony” - the cart, along with other details like personalized match box favors - featured a caricature of bride and groom illustrated by

the bride. “I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember,” says Amelie. In 2020, I started my own creative business, Cleo Creative Co., where I design brands, illustrate children’s books, sell prints, and more! I knew I wanted to incorporate this into my wedding.” Amelie drew inspiration from old Hollywood for the style for the wedding, conscious of making sure it wouldn’t look too dated when she looked back. “As the big day approached, I was feeling like I needed to flex my creative muscle a bit more,” she says. “I wanted to show people that I was more than just a bride!” Amelie created posters from
their engagement photos for the band poster frames in the entryway into the venue and created a personalized logo that she placed on the posters and over a disco ball background on loop to make a video to play on all of the TVs at the venue during the reception. “I wanted something so unique to us and a way to really showcase my talent in a way no one would forget.” Amelie called on the Uncommon Camellia team for assistance with planning the wedding, noting that she loved working with them. “They turned every snag along the way into an afterthought within seconds,” she says. Amelie says that the reception at House of Blues “felt like

more of a concert than a reception and everyone said they’d never had more fun at a wedding before.” D-Play performed and Amelie joined them on stage to sing her favorite karaoke song - “Party in the USA.” “I’ve been told I look and talk just like Miley [Cyrus] my entire life, and I really embraced this as a tween,” she shares. “This song has been my karaoke song since the day it came out. When I was singing it on stage, I just naturally started doing the dance I made up for it in my room when I was probably 13. Such a cool full circle moment and so grateful to our band for making it happen!” Amelie chose a traditional wedding cake with Swiss Confectionery’s signature lemon filling. “The design
featured three tiers of intricate white-on-white piping in a vintage Lambeth style, creating an elegant and timeless feel,” she shares. “The red cherries (which were faux to avoid them bleeding into the icing) add a playful, retro twist.” Chuck’s cake was a combination of LSU’s stadium and a pot of crawfish, which Amelie describes as “the perfect homage to our roots as individuals and a couple.” After the reception, Amelie and Chuck hired pedicabs to bring their wedding party to the Goldmine. “I think all of our guests managed to follow us there! No one wanted the night to end, it was great!”

CASSIDY + CONNOR’S STORY “Connor and I met in high school when we were 14 years old,” shares Cassidy. “We started dating about 6 months later, and the rest is history!” Connor proposed on Christmas Eve. “We had our usual plans: dinner at his parents’ house, church, then a gift exchange between just us two at home. He was acting completely normal all evening, so I didn’t suspect a thing.” Cassidy opened Connor’s gift - a coffee mug that read “Does this ring make me look engaged?” - as he knelt down on one knee with a ring in hand. “I love that we were able to share this moment between just us two at home. We celebrated with some champagne, then decided to make some rounds to share the news with our families!”

VICTORIA + LEONIDAS’ STORY “We met while working at the hospital at the beginning of the pandemic,” says Victoria. Leonidas took her to Rome, Italy in February of 2024 where he proposed in a secret overlook of the city and the two said “I do” just seven months later under a canopy of beautiful oak trees in Vernon, Florida. “Our wedding was a testament to God’s grace and protection,” shares Victoria. “Just two days before our big day, Hurricane Helene swept through, and we braced for the worst. The week leading up to the wedding was filled with uncertainty, but to our surprise, our venue stood strong. Every oak tree remained untouched, not a single branch fell, and it was nothing short of perfect— clear skies, a gentle breeze, and the love of our closest family and friends surrounding us. What could have been a disaster became a beautiful reminder that even in life’s storms,
God’s hand is always at work, turning trials into triumphs.”

MELIE + CHIBUZOR’S STORY “Chibuzor and I met in Atlanta,” says Melie. “I lived there at the time, and Chibuzor still considered it home though stationed in Gulfport. He would make frequent trips, and we were fortunate enough to find each other on one of them. We were inseparable after that! “ Chibuzor proposed in one of his favorite cities - San Diego. ”He had planned a sunset proposal, but our travel plans didn’t allow…he ended up proposing in a little restaurant in downtown San Diego,” says Melie. “He took advantage of a magic show that was going on to create the most magical moment. I said Yes!” “Our wedding was very intimate, just the two of us,” Melie shares. “We had previously had a smaller Nigerian traditional marriage with our close friends and family, and wanted this to be just us. We loved how intimate it was. We were able to just focus on each other without any of the typical distractions of a bigger gathering.”

HALEE + HEATH’S STORY “Heath met Halee online while she was living in Birmingham. It’s quite the funny story because she was upfront with him telling him she didn’t even mean to meet anyone. Sure enough Heath was persistent and courted Halee for quite some time as a friend until he built up the courage to ask her to be his girlfriend. He then selflessly followed her to Mobile where she could attend grad school! Heath proposed to Halee at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans because a family tradition of hers each year was visiting the hotels to see the decor.”

KAREN + NORM’S STORY “We met many years ago via a dating app and in fact, we married on the 10-year anniversary of our first date,” says Karen. “One day, we were walking the dog and ever so casually, just as he had a few times before, Norm asked if I’d marry him,” Karen shares. “While I’m not sure if it was the beautiful afternoon, or knowing no matter what I said, we’d be happy just to be together, that time I didn’t hesitate. And the only other thing that came as easily as saying ‘yes’ in that moment was deciding for certain we would marry on the anniversary we had already been celebrating for the past 10 years - February 4th, 2024.” “After thinking it over, we decided that we’d have the wedding we wanted rather than the wedding that convention dictates. We decided to elope…With no guests or a formal reception to worry over, we were able to relax and focus on fun details, like our attire, the flowers and how we would spend the days leading up to our wedding.” “New Orleans was our city of choice for the food, the live music, the history and the opportunity to explore this city, for the first time, together. We loved every moment of it.”

JESSICA + AARON’S STORY “We met on Bumble,” says Jessica. “We talked for a long time and then he asked me to a movie. The rest was history.” “We had been thinking of getting married for a while, but I wanted a nice ring and I wanted to pick it out,” shares Jessica. “He finally started to bug me to go ring shopping. It took me a bit to find the perfect ring.” For the proposal, Aaron planned a private moment at home on their regular Tuesday night date night. “One Tuesday, I came home and he had decorated the entry way in our house….he got down on one knee and proposed!” Jessica and Aaron planned their wedding in under 6 weeks with the help of Kristen Rauch of PK Weddings and Events, who Jessica says made the process simple and straightforward. “I did not go very traditional in many ways but I took what I wanted out of the traditions and used them to make our day,” she says. Jessica’s favorite part of the day was posing for photos with Aaron. “It’s not something I can normally get Aaron to do with me. It gave us some nice quality time on our wedding day.”
