APRIL 2020

SETTING THE BAR HIGH A GOODBYE NOTE TO MY REALLY SUPER GRAMMA

Just before this viral outbreak hit, I lost my Gramma. Fortunately, I had time to share these thoughts with her before she passed: Boy, am I lucky that you are my Gramma. I don’t know if I have told you this, but I have really enjoyed having you home the last couple of years. I look forward to every holiday, milestone celebration, and family gathering that you been able to come to. I’ve also enjoyed the random phone calls and drop-bys I’m able to do. When I learned you were moving to Arizona way back in the 1990s after you and Grampa retired, I was really upset. I didn’t know what I was going to do without my Gramma just down the street. My whole life, you were always there for me. As it turns out, even after you moved, you were still just a phone call or a plane ride away. I took many trips to your Arizona house (and you took many trips back to Michigan), but the time I flew out and drove back with you and the trip I took during my college spring break are the two most memorable for me. I remember waking up in your guest bedroom to the cold, crisp air and warm smell of coffee. I still love the smell, but ironically not the taste, of coffee. I remember you took me to IKEA when it first opened, just so you could introduce me to Swedish meatballs in their restaurant. I remember laughing about the waiter at a diner in New Mexico who thumbtacked his

pants to his shoes so they wouldn’t drag on the ground. I remember helping you with a few things around your house and waxing your car. I remember reading by and swimming in your solar-heated pool. But mostly, I remember spending time with you. My first memory of you was at the apartment you lived in briefly. I don’t remember if I was spending the night, or just part of a day, but I was repeatedly asking you to, “Get the bam and bam-bam the Monkey!” I’m told I only ever asked you to do this. When I was bleeding, I always wanted my Gramma to bandage me up (sorry Mom!). Do you remember me giving you dry maps to protect your hair every 100 feet as we ran out of Disney in the rain 20 years ago? It’s always been a point of pride for me that you are a nurse, that you’re 100% Swedish by blood and 100% American, that nearly all of your family lived into their late 80s and 90s, and that you raised three intelligent, hardworking kids. You taught me a lot throughout my life and were always a role model who set the bar high. At 95 years old, from where I stand, you’ve lived a life full of both accomplishment and a family who loves you. You always tell my girls that they have a really super Dad, but today, I want to make sure you know that you’re a really super Gramma.

The Age of Stress HELPING YOUR CHILD OVERCOME ANXIETY

5 GENERATIONS OF 5-STAR SERVICE

It’s hard to imagine kids as anything but carefree, happy, and eager to explore the world around them. However, children experience stress just like adults do, which can severely impact their typically cheerful dispositions. Since April is National Stress Awareness Month, now is an opportune time to familiarize yourself with tools and information that can help you alleviate your child’s stress. WHAT ARE THEIR STRESSORS? Any number of everyday factors can lead to stress, and stress can plague anyone who feels overwhelmed. Toddlers and young children going to day care or school for the first time may experience separation anxiety due to being apart from their parents. Older kids and teenagers may feel mounting social and academic pressure. Even something as simple as overhearing loved ones arguing or seeing a sad news report can add to a child’s stress levels. HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS STRESSED? When a kid is stressed, they will exhibit odd behavior and even undergo physical changes. Depending on your child’s age, watch for mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, headaches, trouble focusing, or withdrawal from the people around them. According to KidsHealth.org, younger children may also pick up habits like twirling their hair or sucking their thumb, while older kids may start to bully others, lie, or rebel. CAN I HELP REDUCE THEIR STRESS? According to KidsHealth.org, good nutrition, proper rest, and healthy attention are great ways to help kids manage their stress. Set time aside each day to talk and spend time with your children; talking about worries will reduce or relieve anxieties. If you know about an upcoming stressful situation, like a school exam or a health checkup, prepare your child by studying with them or talking to them about what to expect.

In my family, we have been meeting Southeastern Michigan’s cleaning needs for five generations. We work hard to treat our customers like we would want members of our own family to be treated, whether that means brightening their day with a smile or going above and beyond to make sure they’re ready to look and feel their best for special occasions. For us, providing good service is part of upholding our family name, and we love hearing from satisfied customers like Mary H. After her recent experience with us, she wrote this: “When my son was getting married, the shirt for his tux was very wrinkled. I called several cleaners in the Berkley area, and not one would steam it for me. I called Janet Davis Cleaners, and a very nice gentleman told me to bring the shirt in and he would take care of it. When I took it in, he said, ‘Let me clean it for you too. There’s a spot on it.’ The shirt was done the same day and was perfect! I will never use another cleaner. Give them a chance — they do a wonderful job, and their customer service is a 10! I will not forget the kindness shown to me on such an important occasion.” Thanks for your kind words, Mary. We’re glad we could help. We have locations in Berkley and Bloomfield and offer delivery throughout Oakland and Wayne Counties. We also care about the environment and offer wet cleaning for many garments — which is the greenest cleaning method available. We provide cleaning services for casual, professional, and specialty garments.

Don’t stop here. For more tools and information regarding stress reduction in children, visit KidsHealth.org or contact your doctor.

LAUNDRY IN THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS

As dry cleaners around the nation shut down, and more and Americans switch to doing their laundry at home, there are a few things we want you to keep in mind. First, we’ve done tons of reading about the coronavirus, and all our sources are conclusive about one thing: You can kill viruses with a combination of mechanical action and detergent. In other words, washing a towel you just sneezed in with normal detergent in your washing machine should deactivate any lingering viruses. For added protection, if you, or someone in your house has COVID-19, look online for directions on how to safely bleach your items. Viruses aside, if you suddenly find yourself with a lot more laundry than you’re used to taking care of on your own, here are our top tips for getting the most out of your home laundry setup.

last 5% of a drying cycle, so by mixing fabric weights, you’re probably shrinking or damaging your lighter-weight fabrics.

MORE SOAP IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER

A common misconception about laundry detergent is the more soap you add, the cleaner your clothes will get. That’s just not true. If you look carefully at your laundry detergent cap or scoop, you’ll see there’s a tiny line at the bottom. That’s all the soap you really need for a single load. Adding beyond the line just means that not all of the soap will be properly washed away. Rather than getting clothes extra clean, you get extra soap residue. Remember, washing your towels and garments properly will help you and your family stay healthy.

DON’T MIX FABRIC WEIGHTS

When you’re putting together a load of laundry, most people focus on grouping like colors. Another consideration is the garment type and weight in the load. If you wash an ultralight T-shirt with a heavy cotton towel and then toss everything in the dryer together, your dryer will keep running until the entire load is dry. Most damage to clothes happens in the first 5% and the

4 The Best Locations for Spring Blooms

Spring is here, which means that even though we can’t visit them in person this year, flowers are finally showing themselves after a long winter. From the safety of your home, take a digital tour online to check out some of the best places in the U.S. to see flower blossoms and welcome the season. GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS The Great Smoky Mountains National Park stretches across North Carolina and Tennessee, and while its scenery is beautiful year- round, the park is especially alluring to nature enthusiasts during the spring. Through this season, miles of lady’s-slipper orchids, irises, cardinal flowers, and lilies dot its lush green landscape. It’s dubbed “Wildflower National Park” throughout this time of year, and you can experience it by car or on foot. Before visiting, check NPS.gov for updated information on park closures due to COVID-19. CRESTED BUTTE Crested Butte, Colorado, is best known for its winter sports and summer hikes. But recently it has drawn the attention of flower enthusiasts for its unique pink, orange, and gold alpine wildflowers that appear in the spring. This natural phenomenon even inspired the creation of the annual Wildflower Festival in midsummer, which IN THESE BEAUTIFUL LOCATIONS SEE SPRING BLOOM

features nature walks, art, photography, culinary experiences, and more. For a truly unique experience, you can even ascend the town’s titular Crested Butte to spot some rare alpine sunflowers next to the picturesque West Elk Mountains. ANTELOPE VALLEY The California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster, California, is a 1,780- acre park that features sloping hills covered with fields of vibrant orange, yellow, and red poppies in the spring. Warm temperatures and heavy rainfall across Southern California during this time of year create a brief period of thick blooms as far as the eye can see. And while the poppies can be enjoyed from the comfort of your car, the best way to experience them is to walk the leisurely Antelope Loop Trail for a breathtaking, up-close adventure. Visit Parks.CA.gov for the latest information on visiting the parks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Spring flora is gorgeous and naturally attracts large crowds of people every year. If you plan to visit any of these destinations, just remember that their ecosystems are delicate. Respect park signs, stay on designated trails, and do your part to make sure these flowers return year after year for future generations to enjoy.
