Did you know that over 75% of adults experience dental anxiety? Some could be due to past negative experiences at the dentist, fear of the unknown, or experiencing pain, or patients are uncomfortable voicing their concerns because they don’t have a positive relationship with their doctor. I see many patients with dental phobia and do everything I can to make them feel comfortable. I understand why many people fear going to the dentist, but the only way to overcome it is to face it head-on. But you won’t have to face your dental phobia alone — my team and I will be right there with you every step of the way. We have systems in place at Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants that help our patients feel comfortable during their visit and ensure your overall experience is seamless. THINKING ABOUT GETTING DENT

4 Ways They Improve Your Overall

People decide to get dental implants for an abundance of reasons. Some reasons could be because a patient has missing teeth, wants to restore their ability to chew, or because it’s a better alternative than dentures. But most importantly, dental implants can improve and preserve the health of your bone and gums. Here are four ways dental implants can protect your overall oral health. LOWERS YOUR RISK OF CAVITIES AND GUM DISEASE. When you have missing teeth, brushing and flossing are difficult because of the empty socket(s) inside your mouth. Because of this, you have a higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Additionally, open tooth sockets can trap food particles, bacteria, and plaque. One of the main reasons that gum disease occurs is because plaque and decay aren’t treated. However, when you have dental implants, they fill in those sockets, act as regular teeth, and prevent other dental conditions from occurring. PROHIBITS FURTHER TOOTH LOSS. Most of us know that the roots in our mouths keep our teeth in place. But the surrounding teeth help secure other teeth in place as well. Because of this, if

you lose one of your teeth, you are more likely to lose additional teeth. Dental implants can prevent further tooth loss by filling in the gap in your mouth and providing your other teeth with something to lean on and secure them.

3 WAYS TO GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT BRUSHING THEIR TEETH

Good dental hygiene starts at a young age. As parents know, it can be challenging at times to motivate kids to keep their teeth clean. What can you do if your kids simply aren’t interested in brushing, flossing, or rinsing? How can you instill these habits and get the ball rolling? It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month! This month, we wanted to spotlight a few ways to get your kids excited (or, at least, motivated) to keep their teeth looking their best. Here are a few ideas to get you and your kids started.

this. Here’s what you can do: Get a timer and set it for two minutes. Then get your brushes ready and go! Whoever brushes for the full two minutes gets two points. Anyone who stops brushing during that time only gets one point. Then at the end of the week or month, tally up the points. Whoever has the most wins! Kids go head-to-head against one another — or against the grown-ups. Throw in prizes for a little extra fun! LET YOUR KIDS PICK THEIR TOOTHBRUSHES. Fun toothbrushes are just that — fun! When shopping for a new brush, let the kids pick their own. They can choose from different colors or characters — just as long as it’s a soft-bristled brush. At the same time, let them pick their own toothpaste. This is something that often goes overlooked. Sometimes, mint can be overwhelming for younger kids, so a fruitier or milder flavor is a good way to encourage them to brush better. REWARD GOOD HABITS. While we may be talking about practicing good oral care habits, this tip really applies to any good habits. They should be encouraged and rewarded. Much like the game, kids get points every time they brush. As they accumulate points, they can cash them in for prizes. Make up a schedule of prizes that they can choose from. Maybe for 10 points, they can get a small reward. If they save up 100 points, they get a much bigger prize. You can also add points for flossing and rinsing — and bonus points for brushing for the full two minutes.

MAKE IT A GAME. A rule of thumb is that you should brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Most of us, kids included, usually fall short of

TAL IMPLANTS?

Our gums play an essential role in our oral health. Our gums are designed to protect our teeth and prevent diseases from occurring in our mouths. Unfortunately, about 47% of American adults over the age of 30 and 70% of adults 65 and older have gum disease. In honor of February being Gum Disease Awareness Month, here’s what you need to know about gum disease and how to prevent it. GUM DISEASE CAN AFFECT YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH. Most people know that gum disease in its early stages is called gingivitis. This is when the gums become swollen, red, and sometimes bleed. Periodontitis is like gingivitis but much more severe — the gums will begin to pull away from your teeth. If this IT’S GUM DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH! Does Gum Disease Only Affect Our Oral Health?

Health

PREVENTS BONE LOSS WITHIN YOUR JAW. Because dental implants act and maneuver like natural teeth, they can also stimulate your jawbone tissue. Like your teeth, your jaw needs pressure from your roots and surrounding teeth to remain healthy. If you have empty tooth pockets, your jaw could deteriorate. EAT YOUR FAVORITE MEALS AGAIN. Sometimes when you’re missing teeth, it can make eating difficult. You may be unable to eat certain foods because of your teeth and empty sockets. Because of the pain and discomfort you could feel, many limit their diet to avoid tooth and mouth pain. But with dental implants, you can return to eating what you love once your implants heal. occurs, you may lose some of your teeth.

But gum disease affects more than your oral health — it can also harm your physical health. With

periodontitis, bacteria can spread throughout the rest of your body. If you’re experiencing extreme and severe cases of gum disease, you’re at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, and dementia. IS GUM DISEASE REVERSIBLE? Gum disease can be cured if caught at its earliest stage — gingivitis. The redness, tenderness, bleeding, and bad breath that gingivitis causes can be reversed with at-home oral care and visiting your dentist for additional care. Your doctor can perform a deep cleaning that includes scaling and root planing, which can help treat gingivitis. Unfortunately, if gingivitis is untreated and progresses into periodontitis, it cannot be reversed. WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME TO PREVENT GUM DISEASE? One of the only ways to avoid gum disease is to ensure you’re caring for your teeth. First, and most importantly, brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes. You can use apps and timers to ensure you’re brushing correctly and getting every quadrant. You also want to floss at least once a day, preferably at night, to pick out food that may be stuck between your teeth. It’s also best to stop using tobacco products and minimize sugary foods when possible. But it’s imperative that you visit your dentist every six months for a cleaning and examination. Call our office today if you need to schedule an appointment or have your teeth examined for gum disease. We will be happy to look at your teeth and discuss your next steps.

A true story inspired the uplifting tale, and according to some reviews, you may want to have tissues ready. 2. ‘YES DAY’ — Imagine spending an entire day saying “yes” to everything your kids requested. Congratulations: You’ve stepped into the plot of “Yes Day”! In this film, parents Alison and Carlos go along with their kids’ wildest desires and watch family bonding magic unfold. The Raising Children Network recommends this movie for adults and older kids only. 3. ‘CHICKENHARE AND THE HAMSTER OF DARKNESS’ — The plot of this animated movie is as creative as its title! It follows a cartoon hero named Chickenhare, who is 50% rabbit, 50% bird, and 100% confused about his place in the world. He’s also on a quest with friends to defeat his evil uncle before it’s too late. Think of the film as

a funny, adventurous, family-friendly take on the classic tale “The Ugly Duckling.”

4. ‘DUMPLIN’’ — Mashable called

“Dumplin’” “the definition of sweet.” The movie stars Rosie (played by Jennifer Aniston) as a pageant-obsessed former beauty queen whose daughter, Willowdean, doesn’t fit conventional beauty standards. When Willowdean enters her mom’s pageant in a protest complete with dancing and Dolly Parton tunes, she sparks a small-town revolution. This movie is recommended for children ages 13 and up. 5. ‘ WE CAN BE HEROES’ — Since its release in 2020, this superhero movie has quickly become a family favorite. The story opens with an aliens-versus-superheroes showdown, and when the aliens win and take the heroes hostage, their kids come to the rescue. As the title implies, the film will leave you feeling like you can be a hero, too.

Are you stuck in a TV rut and starting to feel down in the dumps? (Thanks, seasonal depression.) If so, check out one of these heartwarming movies for a pick-me-up. 1. ‘RESCUED BY RUBY’ — If your family loves dogs, this kid-friendly flick will be a real crowd-pleaser.
