The First World War finally came to an end at 11 o’clock on the morning of November 11th 1918. Over a hundred years after the end of the Great War, our commemorative tour explores the poignant battlefield sites, museums and memorials dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in Flanders Fields.
Gain an insight into the World War I Battlefields of Flanders and the Somme which shaped the history of modern Europe and commemorate the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for peace. Accompanied by local battlefields guide we see the key sites, cemeteries and monuments as well as attending the moving Last Post ceremony.

Day 2 Flanders Battlefields, In Flanders Field Museum & Last Post Ceremony, Ypres This morning, we meet our guide and visit the In Flanders Field Museum , located in the Cloth Hall on the town’s market square. This award-winning museum recalls personal stories of individuals during World War I through varied objects on display and the latest technological museum applications, including an interactive Poppy Bracelet. Next, we gain an insight into the Flanders battlefields and have the chance to pay our respects at two of the key cemeteries: Tyne Cot and Essex Farm, where the poet John McCrae wrote his famous poem. Dinner is taken at a local restaurant back in Ypres before attending the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Day 3 The Somme Battlefields, Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum & Thiepval After breakfast we travel to Peronne and with an expert battlefields guide we explore the Somme Battlefield area. We visit the Historial de la Grande Guerre Museum , located in the town’s castle. The museum’s displays and films aim to show visitors not only what life was like for soldiers on the front and behind the lines, but also the effect of the Great War on the civilians who were occupied by an enemy force. Following lunch in Albert, we visit other key sites such as the Thiepval Memorial and Beaumont Hamel Memorial Park. Day 4 Departure After breakfast, we begin our journey home. Today we embark on a full day, step-on guided tour of the wartime sights surrounding Ypres. Our first stop is the largest and most famous of the British and Commonwealth Cemeteries, Tyne Cot . A short distance away, we then visit the Memorial Museum of Passchendaele and learn about the history of the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. After our visit, we enjoy free time for lunch in the town of Poperinge, before making our way to Talbot House , a comfortable retreat for weary troops with a library, canteen, walled garden and a chapel in the attic. We are immersed in the history of Talbot House, enjoying a cup of tea or coffee in the canteen, reading a book and climbing to the attic. Day 3 Ypres Driver’s Day Off Today we visit the excellent In Flanders Fields Museum , located in the Cloth Hall. This moving museum now makes use of the latest technology in its portrayal of the history of the Great War. We then spend the afternoon at leisure, exploring this fascinating town. This evening, we make our way to the Menin Gate, a memorial bearing the names of 54,389 soldiers who have no known grave. Here we join the enormously poignant Last Post ceremony, which takes place at 8pm every evening as an act of remembrance. Day 4 Departure After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
