USA WOMEN’S U19 WORLD CUP TEAM 2019 RESULTS

BANGKOK, THAILAND • JULY 20-28, 2019

The USA U19 World Cup Team reclaimed the top of the podium in dramatic fashion. Coached by Jeff Walz, the USA was led by Paige Bueck- ers, who earned FIBA U19 World Cup MVP honors and Rhyne Howard. Leading 39-34 at halftime in its opener against Australia, the USA took control of the game with a 21-4 third-quarter output and rolled in for the 79-56 victory. Bueckers led the balanced attack with 11 points. The USA tallied 52 points in the paint and compiled a 55-23 rebounding advantage in an 89-67 win over South Korea as Fran Belibi led with 18 points. Led by a game-high 18 points from Howard, the USA sailed past Hungary 95-50 to close preliminary round play. The U.S. outscored Germany 23-14 in the third quarter and claimed a 79-61 round of 16 victory as Bueckers and Celeste Taylor led the U.S. scoring with 13 points each. Behind a smothering defensive effort, the USA allowed just 16 first half points and rolled to a dominating 81-46 victory over Canada in the quarterfinals. Howard led the team with 14 points. Trailing by a point with 3:16 remaining in the game, the Americans scored the final nine points of the contest and came away with a 67-59 semifinal victory over Belgium. The USA’s gold medal run was bookended by rival Australia. However, unlike the opener, the final game was one neither the USA or Australia could ever fully get control of, and the USA gritted out a 74-70 overtime victory to claim gold. With Australia owning a 66-63 lead and in possession of the ball with 14 seconds left, a USA victory looked extremely unlikely. However, an unsportsmanlike foul sent the U.S. to the line where Caitlin Clark made one of the two free throws. Receiving the ball out-of- bounds, Hailey Van Lith, who finished with 16 points, made a back-door cut to the basket and Bueckers, who led the USA offense with 17 points, lofted a pass to her for the game-tying points. Australia struck first in overtime for a 68-66 lead, but the USA closed out the game on a 8-2 run for the 74-70 golden win.
