USA WOMEN’S U19 WORLD CUP TEAM 2015 RESULTS

Behind the leadership of Dawn Staley, the USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team shook off the pressure of being five-time defend- ing champions at the FIBA U19 World Championship and took home a sixth-straight gold medal from Chekhov, Russia. Along the way, A’ja Wilson earned tournament MVP honors. Opening with a 72-57 victory over Spain on July 18, the USA received 18 points and 10 rebounds from Wilson, while Napheesa Collier had 13 points and 14 boards. The USA scored 44 points in the paint and 22 points off of 25 offensive rebounds, en route to a 88-62 win over China on July 18. Collier and Wilson tied for team-high scoring honors with 17 points apiece, and Wilson also grabbed 10 boards. In its final pre- liminary game, the U.S. squad outplayed Egypt 104-41 as every member of the team scored, led by 15 points each from Mariya Moore and Shakayla Thomas. Entering the round of 16, Wilson’s 18 points led the U.S. as it dispatched Argentina 89-39 on July 22. Opening with an 11-0 run, the U.S. cruised past Canada 93-45 in the July 24 quarterfinals. Again, every member of the team scored, led by 12 points apiece from Collier and Moore. The USA’s inside game proved to be too much as the Americans outscored Spain 66-24 in the paint en route to a 80-65 medal semi- final victory on July 25. Collier shot 10-of-13 from the field and finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Wilson had 20 points and 16 rebounds. The USA captured the gold medal in a 78-70 fight-to-the-finish victory against host Russia to capture a record sixth-straight and seventh overall U19 gold medal on July 26. In a game that saw six lead changes and 10 tied scores, the Americans trailed 21-19 at the end if the first quarter. With 4:21 to play and leading by three, 68-65, the USA scored seven-straight points for its largest lead of the night, 75-65, with 2:41 left to play and then held the Russians back in the final minutes to earn the eight-point golden victory.
