USA WOMEN’S U19 WORLD CUP TEAM 2013 RESULTS

PANEVEZYS & KLAIPEDA, LITHUANIA • JULY 18-28, 2013

Led by Katie Meier and featuring Nikki Caldwell and Kelly Graves as assistant coaches, the U.S. squad traveled to Lithuania in hopes of win- ning the USA’s fifth-straight U19 gold medal.

Not only did the squad post a perfect 9-0 slate en route to attaining its goal, it outscored all comers by a whopping of 43 points a contest.

Reaching triple digits in each of its first four games, the USA dispatched host Lithuania 113-47 to open play, followed by a 103-56 dismantling of China, a lopsided 103-26 win over Mali and a 102-42 victory over Netherlands in the first game of the second round. Breanna Stewart led the USA for scoring in its first three outings with 26, 20 and 17 points, respectively; while A’ja Wilson put up a team-high 20 points against the Netherlands. Alexis Jones scored a game-high 17 points as the USA pulled away from Canada for an eventual 88-54 vic- tory. Facing also unbeaten France to close preliminary play, the U.S., led by Stewart’s 22 points, passed its toughest test of the tournament. Morgan Tuck, who finished with 16 points, hit one of two from the line to ice the win, 69-63. Behind Wilson’s 19 points, the U.S. overpowered Japan 108-67 in its medals quarterfinals contest. Meeting Australia in the semis, Stewart scored 14 of her game-high 23 points during a 21-0 run that capped the first half and virtually put the game away. The U.S. went on to earn a 77-54 victory. Behind a stifling defensive effort, as well as 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots from tournament MVP Stewart, the USA held France to eight points in the second half for a 61-28 victory and the gold medal.
